Snapshots: Morgan Wolaver

When it comes to where we live and what we consume, Vermonters never run out of declarations to color the state’s portrait: green, organic, natural, fair-trade, local.

But when Morgan Wolaver, owner and president of Otter Creek Brewing and the man behind the one of the first organic ales in the country, stepped into a bar more than a decade ago, he was surprised to see the word “organic” on a beer label. At that point, organic milk, eggs, fruit and veggies were standard, but organic beer was still an oxymoron.

Middlebury Trailrunner: The toughest nine miles in Addison County

Posted on September 11, 2009 |
By Jeff Byers

There! Did that title grab your attention? I love running in September – the days are cooler, the skies are sunnier, and I am starting to reap the benefits of running through the hot, sticky days of midsummer. It is a great time to take on some longer runs, and with that in mind, I will be describing a 9+ mile run which very few people other than me know about. If you look to the east of Middlebury at the first ridge of the Green Mts. – thats where this one goes!

Table Talk: Dining halls I have known

Posted on September 10, 2009 | Blog Category:
By Andrea Suozzo

A blog about everything from cooking food to farming it.

I ate in the Middlebury College dining hall for four years, and the experience had its ups and downs.

Middlebury treats its students pretty well. The food is good – you’re more likely to find rice and beans or sauteed vegetables than you are to find tater tots or burgers – unless, of course, it’s Hamburger Friday.

Snapshots: Jean Barnard

Jean Barnard’s grandfather was an oil painter. He sat in a room — one-legged after losing a bout with diabetes — and painted. His daughter Flora inherited his artistic tendencies and at the age of 17 she was employed by a designer to lurk in the corners of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and Madison Square Garden, recording the latest Paris fashions. Then, with the designs freshly in her head, Flora ran back to the office to sketch the details, from the neckline to the hem, of the dresses she had just seen.

Middlebury Trailrunner: TAM, Means, and Battell Woods

Posted on September 4, 2009 |
By Jeff Byers

Probably just about every trailrunner in Middlebury knows and enjoys the Trail Around Middlebury, or “TAM”. It circumnavigates the village of MIddlebury, going through a mix of fields and forests, doing a remarkably good job of avoiding populated areas. I am told its complete circumference is about 16 miles, making for a very long trail run, but most of us will want to break it down into smaller segments.

Table Talk goes to the movies

A blog about everything from cooking food to farming it.

Let’s pause for a second to think about food and the media. Or, for now, just food movies.

Off the top of my head I get Food, Inc., Ratatouille, Supersize Me, Chocolat, Big Night, Tampopo, Babette’s Feast.

Full text of Gov. Douglas' announcement that he will not seek reelection

Governor Jim Douglas announced Aug. 21 in Montpelier that he will not seek a fifth term in office.

I want to thank all of you for coming this morning.

I especially want to thank the members of my Administration for being here, as well as
my staff.

Since January 1973, after I was first elected to the Vermont House, I’ve been making the
trip over the Appalachian Gap from my home in Middlebury to serve the people in
Montpelier.

Snapshots: Jim and Jennifer Vyhnak and the Vermont Ukulele Society

Posted on August 28, 2009 | Blog Category:

BRISTOL — After a day of luaus and roving through Hawaii’s scenic vistas, Jim and Jennifer Vyhnak ducked into the first place they saw with air conditioning: Scotty’s Music shop in Kalaheo, Hawaii. Not only did the shop have air conditioning, but hanging just beyond the door were walls of peculiar-looking instruments. The shop owner immediately plucked one of the “miniature guitars” off the wall and handed it to the couple.

“Almost every tourist gets a ukulele,” she told Jim. “But few ever actually play it.”
