Tiger runners highlight local effort at state cross country meet

THETFORD — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ cross-country team took third in Division II to highlight local efforts at Saturday’s Vermont Cross Country Championships at Thetford Academy.

The Tiger girls finished with 127 points, trailing only first-place Harwood, which dominated the 11-team field by scoring 21 points, and Montpelier (67). Vergennes scored 236 to take 10th, while Mount Abraham did not field a full team.

November, ugh: so soon we go from warm to cold; the trees’ colorful leaves now carpeting the ground demanding to be raked; darkness coming right after lunch it seems; geese clattering overhead, black against a gray sky honking a valediction — and it will only get darker and gloomier ....

I’m not a winter person, runs in the family. You will not find Lindholms on the slopes or trails. It’s cold out. We come inside when it’s cold.

Panther volleyball tops Tufts, takes title

MEDFORD, Mass. — The second-seeded Middlebury College volleyball team on Sunday upset No. 1 Tufts (24-3) in five sets (14-25, 25-19, 25-19, 24-26, 15-11) to win its fifth NESCAC title and earn the league’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division III tournament. The Panthers also won the league’s title in 1997, 1998, 2010 and 2012.

Women's field hockey gets NCAA bid after league loss

MEDFORD, Mass. — Top-seed Tufts (16-2) defeated the visiting Middlebury College field hockey team, 3-1, in Sunday’s NESCAC field hockey final, but the 14-4 Panthers on Monday learned they will have a chance to defend their 2015 NCAA Division III title when they received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

The Panthers, who were ranked No. 4 before defeating Hamilton on Saturday in a NESCAC semifinal and then losing to Tufts, will be heading to an NCAA Regional this weekend hosted by top-ranked Messiah College (17-1) in Mechanicsburg, Pa.

Mount Abe hosts cross country race for youngsters

BRISTOL — A dozen-and-a-half youngsters challenged themselves and enjoyed a sunny Friday afternoon on Oct. 14, when the Mount Abraham Union High School cross-country program hosted its annual Mount Abe Cross Country PeeWee Invitational.

Participants ranged from kindergarteners to 6th-graders, and distances ranged from a quarter-mile to a mile.

Panther assistant coach wins national recognition

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College women’s lacrosse assistant coach Alice Lee has been named the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III National Assistant Coach of the Year. Lee helped steer the Panthers this past spring to a 22-1 record en route to capturing the Division III National Championship.

Middlebury College football preserves title hopes

CLINTON, N.Y. — The Middlebury College football team thumped host Hamilton on Saturday, 45-10, keeping its hopes alive for a share of the NESCAC title.

The 6-1 Panthers are hosting Tufts, also 6-1, this coming Saturday, while first-place Trinity (7-0) must travel to meet Wesleyan (6-1). A Panther win and a Trinity loss would create a three-way tie for the championship.

Women's soccer falls in playoffs, but earns NCAA bid

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The third-seeded Middlebury College women’s soccer team fell to No. 2 Amherst, 2-0, in a NESCAC semifinal played at Williams College on Saturday, but the 13-4 Panthers still earned an NCAA Division III tournament bid, the program’s ninth.

Men's soccer losses in NESCAC semifinal

AMHERST, Mass. — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team, seeded No. 6 in the NESCAC soccer tournament, on Saturday lost to No. 4 seed Hamilton, 2-1, in a semifinal played at Amherst College.

The Panthers concluded their season at 10-4-3, 6-4-3 vs. NESCAC foes, and as was the case in 2015 was snubbed by the NCAA Division III tournament committee in favor of Tufts. NESCAC tournament winner and defending NCAA champion Amherst was an automatic selection, but Tufts (9-5-2, 6-2-2 NESCAC) became the only other league team chosen.
