Middlebury field hockey seeks league, NCAA crowns

MIDDLEBURY — After Saturday’s 4-1 home victory over Colby in a NESCAC quarterfinal, the Middlebury College field hockey team will enter this weekend’s league final four at Bowdoin with an 11-game winning streak, a 15-1 record, and the No. 3 ranking in NCAA Division III — behind only No. 1 Salisbury and No. 2 Bowdoin.

Tigers go for repeat in D-I vs. undefeated St. Johnsbury

MIDDLEBURY — The next game for the undefeated defending Division I champion Middlebury Union High School football team is the D-I final at Rutland High School on Saturday, and the next opponent is also undefeated St. Johnsbury.

On this past Friday, the top-seeded, 10-0 Tigers posted their fourth shutout in their past five games, 42-0, over visiting No. 5 Colchester. On Saturday, No. 2 St. Johnsbury defeated No. 3 Essex, 26-6.

Middlebury women race to NESCAC victory

MIDDLEBURY — Running on its home course on Saturday, the Middlebury College women’s cross-country team, ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III, edged No. 7 Williams for the NESCAC championship, 38-47.

The league title was the 13th for the Panther women, and Saturday marked the first time the team hosted the NESCAC championship meet since 2003.

The Panther men, ranked No. 9, took third place with 80 points behind No. 3 Williams (39) and No. 7 Colby (76).

Panther women's soccer upsets Jeffs in quarterfinal

AMHERST — The fifth-seeded Middlebury College women’s soccer team on Saturday topped host No. 4 seed Amherst, 1-0, to advance to the NESCAC semifinals for the 11th time in 15 years. The Panthers improved to 10-6 and Amherst dropped to 11-5.

Top seed Williams will host the NESCAC final four this weekend. The Panthers will face Williams in an 11 a.m. semifinal on Saturday. No. 2 Bowdoin will meet No. 3 Connecticut in the other contest at 1:30 p.m. The winners meet for the NESCAC title on Sunday at noon.

WATERBURY — The fashion mags suggest bold prints and the color gray are in this fall, but trendy hunters always choose hunter orange.

That’s because season after season, smart hunters choose fluorescent hunter orange. They know they are safer and understand it helps preserve Vermont’s hunting heritage. Because no matter how rare, each hunting-related shooting reinforces the mistaken perception that hunting is dangerous.

Eagle soccer clinches championship

SOUTH BURLINGTON — On Oct. 26, 2013, the No. 5 Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer team had its high hopes of the program’s first-ever championship dashed.

On that day, vs. No. 5 Harwood in a Division II quarterfinal, the Eagles earned edges of 10-1 in corner kicks and 8-5 in shots on goal, but lost, 2-1, in overtime.

That loss continued frustration for a program that had lost in a semifinal in 2012, and in 2011 earned a No. 4 seed but was upset in OT by a No. 13 seed.
