Panther women's lacrosse improves to 2-0

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team improved to 2-0 by topping host Connecticut College on Saturday, 12-4. The Panthers were ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III last week.

Laurel Pascal scored three goals for the Panthers, Mary O’Connell scored two goals while assisting on three others, and Liza Herzog and Katie Ritter added two apiece against the 1-1 Camels.

Middlebury's men's tennis romps in opening matches

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s tennis team opened its spring season by picking up a pair of 8-1 home victories against Colby and Brandeis in the Duke Nelson Recreation Center. Middlebury, ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division III, is off until March 23, when it plays during its spring break in Atlanta.

Panther women's tennis starts with two 9-0 victories

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury women’s tennis team opened up its spring season with a pair of 9-0 indoor wins at home against Colby and Brandeis on Saturday. The Panthers are ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III.

Vs. Colby, Middlebury took a 3-0 lead in doubles, dropping just four games. Singles play was similar as the Panthers won 72 of 78 games.

Fencers do well at Middlebury tournament

MIDDLEBURY — Eight local fencers earned medals on March 1 and 2 at the 21st annual Middlebury Open, which was held at Middlebury Union Middle School.

Two earned gold, Vermont Fencing Association coach Viveka Fox of Addison in Veterans Foil and Weybridge’s Ryan Bagley in two youth categories.

Gold, silver and two bronzes were awarded in each event. The medal winners were:

Area hoop players set for all-star games

WINDSOR — Five local high school seniors will play in Saturday’s annual Vermont Basketball Coaches Association North-South Classic at Windsor High School, and a sixth will be honored.

Four of those athletes will play together for the North team in the Division I and II girls’ all-star game: Mount Abraham’s Ashlie Fay and Meghan Livingston and Otter Valley’s Olivia Bloomer and Brittany Bushey.

Tiger girls take state hockey title

VERGENNES — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team claimed the program’s first state championship on Wednesday at the University of Vermont’s Gutterson Fieldhouse.

But it wasn’t easy. The 19-3-1, top-seeded Tigers weathered a third-period storm in which they were outshot by 13-1 and played shorthanded for seven minutes to edge No. 2 Burr & Burton, 2-1, for the Division II crown.

MUHS boys iced by Stowe in D-II final

BURLINGTON — On Thursday, the Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team lost to a Division II team for only the second time this winter.

But this time that setback came at the University of Vermont’s Gutterson Fieldhouse in the D-II final.

No. 2 Stowe improved to 18-4-1 by rallying for a 2-1 victory over the 17-6 Tigers, in the process avenging the Raiders’ 3-2 loss to the Tigers on Jan. 31 and their 2-1 loss to MUHS in the 2011 D-II title game.

Panther women's hockey season on hold

MIDDLEBURY — A quarterfinal upset on Saturday ended the Middlebury College women’s hockey hopes for the NESCAC playoff championship and the league’s automatic NCAA Division III tournament bid, but the Panthers could still earn an at-large bid to the national championships on Monday.

Wrestlers net title, podium slots at Vt. state championship

BENNINGTON — The Vergennes Union High School wrestling team saw senior 160-pound wrestler Kaegan Pearsall win the state championship as the Commodores took fifth at this past weekend’s state championship meet.

The Commodores scored 102 points and were the top team that normally competes in Division II in the standings; Vermont wrestling does not recognize divisions.

Middlebury women's lacrosse opens with road victory

MEDFORD, Mass. — The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team opened its season on Saturday with a 12-8 win over host Tufts. The Panthers were ranked No. 3 in the preseason NCAA Division III poll and will travel to Connecticut College this coming Saturday.

Middlebury took to a 10-2 halftime lead and withstood a Tufts rally in what was the NESCAC and season opener for both teams on this past Saturday.
