Eagle baseball outlasts Otter Valley

BRISTOL — Two Division II high school baseball teams fresh off their first wins met in Bristol on Friday, and it was host Mount Abraham that made it two in a row, holding off Otter Valley, 8-5.

The Eagles (2-6) built a 6-1 lead through three innings, but saw the Otters rally against Eagle sophomore starter Dustin Whitcomb in the fourth and fifth to pull to within 6-5.

Middlebury boys' tennis moves to 7-0

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ tennis team defeated visiting Montpelier, 5-2, on Saturday to complete a 3-0 week and improve to 7-0.

The Tigers’ remaining three matches come against teams they have defeated, putting an undefeated regular season within reach. Earlier last week, the Tigers defeated host North Country, 5-0, on Wednesday, and host U-32, 4-3, on Tuesday.

In high school baseball: Otter Valley, Eagles earn first wins

ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham topped Vergennes for its first win of the spring to highlight local high school baseball action in the latter half of last week. In other games, Otter Valley also picked up its first win, and Middlebury dropped a home contest.

Rivalries highlight local softball action

ADDISON COUNTY — A pair of local clashes highlighted the high school softball slate late last week: Vergennes defeated Mount Abraham, which bounced back to defeat Otter Valley. OV also split two other contests, while Middlebury knocked off an unbeaten team.

MUHS wins three-way meet on Mount Abe track

BRISTOL — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ and boys’ track and field teams won a three-team meet hosted by Mount Abraham on Tuesday; Mount Mansfield was the Eagles’ second guest.

The Tiger girls scored 72 points, followed by the Cougars (52.5) and the Eagles (44.5).

The Tiger boys scored 91 points, followed by the Eagles (48.5) and the Cougars (38.5).

With just three schools participating, the top five finishers in each event scored points for their teams.

Eagle softball proves to be more efficient, topples the Tigers

BRISTOL — In a Tuesday clash of Addison County high school softball teams playing well this spring, host Mount Abraham came out on top over Middlebury, 5-2.

Both teams managed to get runners on base despite strong pitching from junior pitchers Rachael McCormick for the Eagles and Payton Buxton for the Tigers. But it came down to Mount Abe’s ability to bring those baserunners home: The Tigers left six on base and had runners thrown out at third base and home plate.

Women's lax reaches league semifinal

MIDDLEBURY — The second-seeded Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team defeated No. 7 Tufts, 14-10, in a Saturday NESCAC quarterfinal and advanced to this weekend’s league final four, to be hosted by top-seeded Trinity.

The 15-1 Panthers will meet No. 3 Amherst (12-3) at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, while defending champion Trinity (14-2) will meet No. 5 Bates (12-4) at noon. The winners will meet at noon on Sunday, with the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament at stake.
