MIDDLEBURY — After the Middlebury Union High School team opened on Dec. 2 with a 3-0 loss to Montpelier, co-coach Tim Howlett was not upset. The Tigers had an edge in shots on goal, and Howlett thought the team he heads with co-coach Wendy Leeds had played hard and well.

“That kind of effort will win us a lot of games this year,” Howlett wrote in an email.

The Tigers — a team that won three games last winter and finished 0-20 the year before — have not lost since.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School hockey team erupted on offense against winless Mount St. Joseph on Saturday and coasted to a 14-1 home win.

Emmy Hescock paced the attack with four goals, and Saige Twombly added three goals. Gen Beloin and Maria Ploof chipped in with a pair of goals apiece, and Theresa Huestis, Sara Boudah and Kayla Quesnel-Cousino contributed one tally each.

Tiger goalie Ashley Howlett stopped nine of the 10 MSJ shots she faced as the Tigers improved to 2-1. That win total equals that of the Tigers’ regular season last winter.

ADDISON COUNTY — With the addition of deer killed during the muzzleloader season that concluded this past Sunday, Addison County weigh stations handled 840 deer this fall during bow, muzzleloader and rifle seasons, plus Youth Hunting Weekend.

That total falls well short of 2008’s final tally of 1,026. The 186 fewer deer weighed in Addison County translates to an overall drop of 18.1 percent, with decreases across the board:

• The combined bow and muzzleloader seasons total this year was 448, a 14.7 percent decline from 2008.

BRANDON — On Friday in Brandon, the Otter Valley Union High School girls’ basketball team led for most of the game against visiting Middlebury, but crucially not the final 2:35.

That’s when the visiting Tigers capped a comeback from a 10-point third-quarter deficit to take a hard-fought 53-46 win in the crowded House of Noise.

MUHS coach Cindy Atkins believes her team — which was shorthanded due to injuries and dressed just eight players — did well to win in a challenging environment against a tough foe.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School boys’ basketball team suffered a pair of losses on Monday night in the Commodores’ home opener.

Visiting Division I foe Champlain Valley hung on for a 59-49 victory over the D-II Commodores, and VUHS (1-2) also lost three-year starting point guard Jackson Alexander to what could be a serious knee injury. In the preseason, Coach Peter Quinn’s team, one of the favorites in D-II, had already learned it would play this winter without two other injured seniors projected to be key substitutes, Jesse Tynan and Josh Bushey.

BRANDON — If the Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team is going to win in the early going, the Eagles will probably rely on the formula they used to knock off host Otter Valley on Thursday, 49-41, in both teams’ opener.

The Eagles’ four veterans all contributed, notably junior point guard Jen Loyer, who tossed in 28 points and added nine steals, six assists and five rebounds.

MIDDLEBURY — A young and shorthanded Middlebury College women’s basketball team outlasted visiting Castleton on Tuesday for its first victory, 51-43.

The Panthers — who are playing this semester without key juniors Lauren Sanchez and Allison Needham, who are studying abroad, and on Tuesday were without senior guard Alana Wall due to a scheduling conflict — improved their record to 1-3.

Castleton dropped to 2-3 despite team highs from former Middlebury Union High School standout Katie Hoxsie, a senior guard, in minutes (36), rebounds (9), assists (5) and steals (2).

ADDISON COUNTY — No local high school girls’ soccer teams will be hanging championship banners in their gyms after this fall, when the four local squads combined for just 12 wins.

But each team had rays of hope for the future in the progress of younger players and in moments when practice paid off in progress and attractive soccer. And each saw fine individual performances recognized here in the 2009 Addison Independent Girls’ Soccer All-Star Team.
