Panther women's lax is on to Final Four; Middlebury wins Regional

MIDDLEBURY — The host Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team used a 6-0 first-half run in Sunday’s NCAA Division III regional final vs. Gettysburg to spark a 13-9 victory that sent the Panthers to the NCAA Division III Final Four.

The 20-1 Panthers will face No. 1 Cortland State (20-0) on Saturday at Talen Energy Stadium in Philadelphia in one semifinal. Franklin & Marshall (20-2) will meet Trinity College (18-3) in the other semifinal, and the winners will play on Sunday, May 29.

OV softball has fast start vs. Patriots, but falls short

BRANDON — For more than half of Friday’s home game vs. Division I power Mount Anthony, the D-II Otter Valley softball team more than held its own.

The Otters did allow the 13-1 Patriots to score two unearned runs in the second and one run on two hits in the third, but rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.

MUHS boys' tennis just keeps winning

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ tennis team took one step closer to an undefeated regular season on Wednesday, when the Tigers edged visiting U-32, 4-3.

The 9-0 Tigers, in a battle with 13-0 South Burlington for the top seed in Division I, are set to wrap up their season by visiting Harwood on Monday. The Tigers defeated the Highlanders, 6-1, earlier this spring.

On Wednesday, the Tigers benefitted from a forfeit at No. 5 singles, but won despite playing without injured No. 2 Jon Fitzcharles, who hurt his ankle two days before.

Girls' lax teams secured at least third seed in playoffs with two wins

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team won twice late last week to move into third place in Division I at 10-2, percentage points behind second-place Mount Anthony (11-2).

The Tigers play three times this week as the regular season concludes, hosting South Burlington (7-6) on Tuesday before playing back-to-back road games on Thursday at Rutland (6-7) and Friday at first-place Mount Mansfield (11-2).

ADDISON COUNTY — Middlebury won twice to highlight area high school baseball action late last week. Meanwhile, Mount Abraham split a pair of games, and Vergennes and Otter Valley each lost twice.

On Thursday, the Tigers edged Spaulding, 5-4, a key result for their hopes of making the Division I playoffs: The two teams are battling for the final playoff spot.

Middlebury girls' tennis downs U-32

EAST MONTPELIER — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ tennis team defeated host U-32 on Wednesday, 6-1, to improve to 8-6.

With one match left in the regular season, at home vs. Harwood on Monday, the Tigers have clinched a winning record heading into the Division I playoffs.

The individual match results on Wednesday were:

•  At No. 1 singles, Bree Cotroneo (M) defeated Alex Hepp (U), 6-1, 6-3.

•  At No. 2 singles, Claire Wulfman (M) defeated Grace Dellinger-Pate (U), 7-5, 6-3.

Boys' tennis keeps perfect record intact

MIDDLEBURY — Thanks in part to a pair of dramatic tiebreaker wins on Monday, the Middlebury Union High School boys’ tennis team edged visiting BFA-St. Albans, 4-3, and in the process the Tigers maintained their perfect record and hold on first place in Division I.

Both No. 1 senior singles player Nick Holmes and No. 4 junior Owen Hammel won their first sets, lost their second sets and trailed late in the first-to-nine-point, win-by-two tiebreakers before rallying to win.
