Letter to the editor: Proposed Brandon solar project would be an eyesore

Posted on March 26, 2018 |
By Jonathan Blake

As a big supporter of solar, wind and hydro energy farming as an alternative to fossil fuels, I have always thought there is a time and place for everything. This solar project of Conti’s off Park Street in Brandon is not one of them. Not only can this project never be shielded from the view of anyone near it, the loss of the beautiful fields on the edge of town will be lost forever.

Letter to the editor: Students lauded for recent protests

Posted on March 26, 2018 |
By Gerry Loney

To all the K-12 students in Vermont who are making your voices heard:

I want to tell you how impressed so many of us are with you.  Realizing that kids like you are the targets of many mass shootings, you have decided to act. You are asking legislators to resist attempts by the NRA and other groups to stifle discussion. You are asking them, instead, to be concerned about your safety and to pass laws that will help protect all of you and all of us.

Two headlines in the paper this week inspired me to write the following:

“Expand Drug Treatment Network to Battle Addiction” and “Half of $28M Tobacco Settlement Will Go to Fight Opioids.”

Letter to the editor: 2015 study makes a powerful case for gun control

Posted on March 26, 2018 |
By Dick Beamish

Regarding your excellent March 19 editorial, “Gun control: Facts vs. fiction.” The “2015 study” you cite makes a powerful case for gun control, showing that states with stronger controls have substantially fewer gun deaths than those with weak controls.

This is the best ammunition I’ve seen so far to refute the National Rifle Association’s nonsense that the best response to gun violence is more guns in the hands of more people.

Editorial: Marches protest gun violence, but why now?

Posted on March 26, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

In Middlebury, about 400 protesters for stricter gun control legislation, joined another 2,500 protesters in Montpelier, and hundreds of thousands of protesters in Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago and more than 800 other places around the country and world in mass marches against gun violence.

It’s a movement started by students and led by students around the country — a grassroots protest that has turned into one of the largest political movements the country has seen since the Vietnam War protests of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Editorial: A stark visual to dairy's reality

Posted on March 22, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

The decline in the number of dairy farms in Vermont has been steady for the past 70 years, even as milk output increases and the economic contribution to the state remains significant. Perhaps because dairy remains an economic powerhouse in the farm sector, we Vermonters aren’t as concerned as we might be to the problems dairy farmers are facing today.

Editorial: Uphill battle to come on gun-control bill

Posted on March 22, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

Vermont’s House of Representatives could vote on a significant gun-control bill as early as this Friday. That prospect follows narrow passage of S.55 by the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. A less restrictive version of the bill had passed the Senate earlier this month, which means that if S.55 passes the full House, some version of the bill would likely be approved by the full Legislature and sent to Republican Gov. Phil Scott for his signature this session.

Ways of Seeing: Lessons of a father's unknown past

By Alice Leeds

Leeds, Alice -Ways of Seeing.jpg

Abi Sessions recently wrote a Ways of Seeing column about her father, who would have turned 100 in February. This got me thinking about my dad, who would have also become a centenarian this month. I share a reflection on his life that seems relevant today.

Dr. Jack Mayer: Kids lead the way on gun safety

Posted on March 22, 2018 |
By Dr. Jack Mayer

This week’s writer is Middlebury pediatrician and author Dr. Jack Mayer.

It seems as if our kids are the grown-ups in the room when it comes to gun safety, universal background checks, and stronger gun laws in Vermont. This Saturday, March 24, is the March for Our Lives all across the U.S. Hundreds of thousands of people will march in Washington, D.C., in Middlebury, Montpelier, Rutland, all across the U.S. led by our courageous, articulate young people, pleading with us, “Enough is Enough!”
