Letter to the editor: Guns were made to kill people; do we really need them?

Posted on May 28, 2018 |
By Fred Barnes

I find myself unable to be quiet about this incredible debate on guns. It shouldn’t be a debate at all. We live in a country that has been violently destroying other countries and the people living in them. This seems to be a well-accepted fact by many leading intellectuals around the world. We are considered a violent nation — a warring nation. Statistics don’t lie. Perhaps we are so used to violence that we are able to accept all this killing of our children.

Letter to the editor: Middlebury parallel parking backed

Posted on May 28, 2018 |
By John Pratt

I agree with Spence Putnam’s suggested parking on the Battell Bridge in downtown Middlebury. I will go one step further — when I was a kid in the ‘50s there was parallel parking all the way from the Library to the next corner which was, at the time, the First National grocery store and is now the art gallery. Believe me, the cars in the 50s were NOT smaller than now!

It would be a simple matter to create spaces that are perhaps another quarter longer so people are not bucking in and out and holding up traffic.

Greg Dennis: Is it Boomers vs. Millenials?

Posted on May 24, 2018 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

Has my generation of Baby Boomers screwed all the ones that came after us?

Steven Brill thinks so. And he’s at least partly right.

Brill, an attorney, journalist and entrepreneur, had a role in glamorizing the big money created by Baby Boomers. He founded the American Lawyer, a magazine that documented the astounding rise to riches of the legal profession.

Now he’s repenting.

Since the late 1970s, lawyers have gotten fat off the financial, technology, healthcare and other booming sectors they so adroitly service.

Jessie Raymond: Ant invaders pose pesky challenge

Posted on May 24, 2018 |
By Jessie Raymond

jessenew ONLINE.jpg

Every time I walked into the kitchen last week, I began singing, “The ants go marching 10 by 10, hurrah, hurrah …”

I wasn’t singing for the fun of it. I was singing in reaction to the scene before me: We had an ant problem.

Ants are nothing new. In an old farmhouse like ours, they’re just one of the varieties of creepy-crawlies that take up residence in the warmer months. In a normal year, we’ll have a few days where tiny ants march in line across the countertop, looking for sweets or maybe just water.

Baser ONLINE 2014.jpg

I write just before we head into a special legislative session. Here are my thoughts on this year’s legislative session’s most noteworthy actions. They include: Paid Family Leave, Minimum Wage, Special Education Reform, a revision to Vermont’s income tax code, gun legislation, and a Clean Water debate.

Victor Nuovo: Introducing John Stewart Mill

Posted on May 24, 2018 |
By Victor Nuovo

Nuovo, Victor ONLINE.jpg

Editor’s note: This is the 16th in a series of essays about political liberalism and conservatism and the two-party system.

John Stuart Mill (1806–73) dominated the intellectual life of English speaking peoples during the 19th century. He and his mentor Jeremy Bentham (1748–1832) were founders of a school of social thought known as Utilitarianism, which provided a rationale for political and economic liberalism.

Ways of seeing: More than skin deep

Posted on May 24, 2018 |
By Alice Leeds

leeds head shot.jpg

Sometimes as a child I would lie in bed and stare at the speckled wallpaper, lights from passing cars moving across my bedroom, and I would think of Mrs. O’Connell. As beams glided across my face, my bedspread, the wooden floor, I had a feeling she knew The Secret.

Where are we?

“Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham, Can you tell me where he’s gone?

He freed a lotta people, but it seems the good die young but I just looked around and he’s gone.”*
