Letter to the Editor: Middlebury should move to carbon neutral economy

Posted on November 2, 2017 |
By Anders Holm

As Middlebury crafts the town plan and prepares a climate change economy it should think long and hard about being the only town on Otter Creek with a waterfall not harvesting the endless, carbon free power of Middlebury Upper falls as it had done for centuries prior ending in 1966, when nuclear power was going to be “too cheap to meter” and a nuclear plant was planned for the shores of Charlotte.

Middlebury was the only town at the time to be bamboozled by the power industry into moving away from renewable energy.

Letter to the Editor: Poetic response to Sabukewicz

Posted on November 2, 2017 |
By Paul A. Stone

Editor's note: The writer is responding to a poem in the Oct. 26 edition of the Independent.

From poet Charles Sabukewicz words brew,

Waxing efficiently on what’s askew,

His dump,

On Trump,

So frightfully true, his words elegantly few.

Letter to the Editor: Research on climate change urged before Nov. 7 vote

Posted on November 2, 2017 |
By Brian Bauer

On Tuesday, Nov. 7, there will be a very important vote in the town of Middlebury. This vote has as much to do with just compensation for a lease as the tax on sugary drinks has to do with ending obesity. It is in fact, a minority’s legal right to express its displeasure, regardless of its effects on everyone else.

Enough reading will supply the knowledge that every form of possible energy available to Vermont has its vocal opposition. Some of the reasons given, by these groups, are the following:

Editorial: Crucial vote for Mount Abe impacts future of its five towns

Posted on November 2, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

For much of the past decade, residents of the five towns that comprise the Mount Abraham Union High School district have discussed various ways to solve the facility’s shortcomings. There have been piecemeal patches, which have included pricey fixes, yet the overall deterioration of the high school building today is beyond dispute. Action needs to be taken.

Letter to the editor: Delaying Mt. Abe project would cost taxpayers more

Posted on October 30, 2017 |
By Ron LaRose

There will be a bond vote on the Mount Abraham Renovation Project this Thursday, Nov. 2.

As a lifelong resident of Bristol and even with no children in the school system, I support this proposal, and I will try to explain why.

Letter to the Editor: Vote "No" on pipeline easement

Posted on October 30, 2017 |
By Alice Eckels

Vermont Gas is hoping for free easements to use Middlebury town property to deliver fracked gas downtown. Gas representatives have suggested that since they will be paying taxes on the pipelines they install, charging for easements in addition is somehow unnecessary or unfair.

Letter to the Editor: Trump anniversary 'scream' planned

Posted on October 30, 2017 |
By Peter Grant

From the Internet:

“Americans from coast to coast plan to commemorate the one-year anniversary of President Donald Trump’s 2016 election win by screaming into the void.”

Let us meet at the gazebo on the Middlebury green at 5 p.m. on Nov. 8 for a big scream of horror at the past year.  Wear something red (which color prompted Munch to paint his famous painting “The Scream”) and bring copies of that picture.

Peter Grant, Bristol
