Letter to the Editor: Mount Abe project is too expensive for residents

Posted on October 30, 2017 |
By Doug Tolles

This Thursday — Nov. 2 — is the day for voters in Bristol, New Haven, Lincoln, Starksboro and Monkton to decide on the so-called $35 million high school bond issue. The actual cost of the project, including interest, is in excess of $52 million according to the superintendent — closer to $60 million according to their fact sheet.

Letter to the Editor: Vote "No" on pipeline easement

Posted on October 30, 2017 |
By Alice Eckels

Vermont Gas is hoping for free easements to use Middlebury town property to deliver fracked gas downtown. Gas representatives have suggested that since they will be paying taxes on the pipelines they install, charging for easements in addition is somehow unnecessary or unfair.

Letter to the Editor: Trump anniversary 'scream' planned

Posted on October 30, 2017 |
By Peter Grant

From the Internet:

“Americans from coast to coast plan to commemorate the one-year anniversary of President Donald Trump’s 2016 election win by screaming into the void.”

Let us meet at the gazebo on the Middlebury green at 5 p.m. on Nov. 8 for a big scream of horror at the past year.  Wear something red (which color prompted Munch to paint his famous painting “The Scream”) and bring copies of that picture.

Letter to the Editor: We need a reasonable Mount Abe proposal

Posted on October 30, 2017 |
By Jodi Lathrop

As I read the article in Thursday’s paper relating to student “feelings” towards the Mount Abraham Union High School building I was struck by one thought. Why do they think the 5 town community doesn’t want to repair the building?

Editorial: Vt. Gas easements and the law of unintended consequences

Posted on October 30, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In public policy, what seems simple is not always so.

Such is the case with the proposed article facing Middlebury voters via Australian ballot on Nov. 7, which asks if voters “shall approve the current Deed of Easement agreements as approved by the Select board at their meeting on June 27 2017, and convey three land easements (one behind the town office and Ilsley library, one near Mister Ups Restaurant, and one on Mill Street) to Vermont Gas Systems?”

Jessie Raymond: 'Friendly skies' tough on stomach

Posted on October 26, 2017 |
By Jessie Raymond

During a layover in the Newark airport on the way back to Burlington Monday, I had one thought: “Stop the world, I wanna get off.”

I didn’t mean it in a metaphorical sense. I meant the world before me was literally spinning, the result of several consecutive days of carsickness, capped off by a rambunctious flight during which the attendants spent most of the time strapped into their jump seats, praying.

Letter to the Editor: Deferring Mount Abe work wouldn't be wise

Posted on October 26, 2017 |
By Louis duPont

Thirty-five million might seem like a lot of money, and it is a lot of money. But a vote for the Mt. Abe Renovation Bond on Thursday, Nov. 2, will be less expensive by far than continuing to put off work that is desperately needed. Like the homeowner who refuses to fix a leaky roof in order to save in the short term and ends up paying way more than the original roofing bill, for sheathing, rafters and rot repair, we cannot afford to kick this can down the road.

Letter to the Editor: Golden Spurs

His ticket out –

those lucky bone spurs in his heels

good for five deferments

a free pass

from the hot lead of Viet Nam

Not for him

the brotherhood of the fallen

Golden Spurs

to match the golden locks

combed over the barren dome

of the Commander in Chief

stout in his demand

that NFL players

stand

for the flag he so loves

for the country

he never served

Letter to the Editor: Free easements aren't deserved

Posted on October 26, 2017 |
By Ross Conrad

There is not a single good reason to give easements to Vermont Gas at no charge. If you agree, please vote NO on Article 1 on Nov. 7, (or during early voting Monday-Thursday between now and November 3rd).

Letter to the Editor: Poor financial decisions led to Porter Medical Center affiliation

Posted on October 26, 2017 |
By Craig Allen

I attended the Porter Medical Center “Community-Wide Town Hall Meeting” Monday night and appreciate the time that both medical center president’s spent before the sizable gathering. Unfortunately, I perceived the distinct body language of a proud small fish being swallowed by a very large fish, no matter how well meaning that fish.
