Letter to the editor: Thankful for the beautiful coyote story

Posted on January 1, 2018 |
By Jessica Danyow

I want to express my appreciation to the Outside Story’s Susie Spikol Faber for her beautiful piece on coyotes in the Dec. 7 issue (read the story by clicking here). In times as divisive as we are living in it was heartening to read her piece about understanding and appreciating the perspective of another, especially when that perspective is that of a species that is subject to such abuse and cruelty as the coyote is.

Opinion: Gov. Scott misses the mark on climate change

Posted on January 1, 2018 |
By Lauren Hierl

To the surprise of many, a recent Agency of Natural Resources report showed that Vermont’s statewide greenhouse gas pollution emissions are rising. Given all the impressive work we’ve done developing clean local renewable wind and solar energy, and the well-documented success of our cutting-edge energy efficiency programs, how could that be?

Editorial: Reflections on 2017 – "Was it all connected to Trump, or did it just seem like it? "

Posted on December 28, 2017 |
By Angelo Lynn

Following the traumatic elections of 2016, it is no surprise that 2017 was a year fraught with chaos, protests and change. Trump was at the political center of much of that chaos as he sought to carry out promises made on the campaign trail, including banning Muslims from certain countries from entering the U.S., repealing the Affordable Care Act, reforming the tax code, pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accord and passing regulations that favored big business, big banks and the fossil fuel industry.

Joanna Colwell: There's no racial justice in tax bill

Posted on December 28, 2017 |
By Joanna Colwell

Walking in Middlebury today, I started wondering about how the Republican tax bill would affect my life. How much will our health care premiums go up? Will our self-employed family even be able to afford insurance? How are we going to pay for college? I feel worried about the future, and at the same time I am aware that every one of these challenges is way more difficult if you are a Black person in America.

Eric Davis: Trump tax cut will affect Vermont

Posted on December 28, 2017 |
By Eric Davis

The Vermont Legislature will reconvene next week for the second session of the 2017-18 biennium. Responding to the impacts of recent changes in tax and health care policy enacted by the Republican Congress or announced by the Trump Administration will be a major item on the Legislature’s agenda for 2018.

Letter to the editor: Better business climate needed

Posted on December 28, 2017 |
By Anders Holm

Gov. Scott dodged the fundamental issues with funding education in Vermont. Stating that delivery to students was the big issue is a cop out and a lie. In the Dec. 21 Independent article on the subject the real issues “a declining workforce, sluggish economic growth and nearly stagnant tax revenues” are mentioned but dodged by the governor.

Letter to the editor: Cornwall firefighters were helpful, cheerful

Posted on December 28, 2017 |
By Bob and Juliet Gerlin

At 6:30 on the morning of Christmas Eve our fire alarms went off. We searched the house, but could not find anything wrong. It then shut off so we went back to bed. Fifteen minutes later it went off again, this time not stopping. We decided to call the Cornwall Fire Department, telling them that it was not an emergency because there was no sign of smoke anywhere.

Poem: An ode to Christmases past, present and future

Posted on December 28, 2017 |
By Rustan Swenson

’Twas the night after Christmas and all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, except for a mouse.

Piles of debris and throwaway toys

Is all that remained from the wee girls and boys.

Children were nestled all snug in their beds

With cell phones and new apps tucked under their heads.
