Community forum: State should handle teacher healthcare

Posted on May 8, 2017 |
By Geo Honigford

This week’s Community Forum is written by Geo Honigford, a school board member from Royalton and the President of the Vermont School Boards Association.

When I first ran for school board in my community 12 years ago, I did so because I am committed to public education and wanted to do my part to ensure the schools in my community provide high quality education to students. I did not fully realize at the time how complex our state’s public education system is, or how complicated the job of a school board member would be.

Letters to the Editor: Trump's health care plan is 'bogus'

Posted on May 8, 2017 |
By Bruce Acciavatti

Well, as evidenced by the mean-spirited, ignorant and hateful decision by the Repugnantan Party’s attempt to gut the Affordable Health Care Act with the bogus “American HCA,” or better known as Trumpcare, all I can say is what a bunch of losers!

Giving huge breaks to the wealthy by cutting back and drastically increasing the cost of health care that many of us depend on is criminal. I think that everyone who calls themself a Republican that supports this effort and the buffoon / ignoramus in the White House is complicit in this.

Legislative Review: Claire Ayer, Trust local school boards on funding

Posted on May 4, 2017 |
By Sen. Claire Ayer

No matter the issue, there’s always another side to the story — and a chance to distort facts just far enough to stay within sight of the truth. There’s no emergency about teachers’ health insurance, but there IS an opportunity for taxpayers to save millions of dollars.

Eric L. Davis: Time to regulate and tax marijuana

Posted on May 4, 2017 |
By Eric L. Davis

Vermont’s legislators will devote some time to marijuana policy as the 2017 session winds down, but it is unlikely that they will take any definitive action this year. Some House members appear to support a simple decriminalization bill that would allow individuals to possess a very small amount of marijuana and cultivate a few plants at home for their personal use. Senators continue to favor the approach they voted for last year: a comprehensive scheme to legalize, regulate and tax the distribution and sale of marijuana in Vermont.

Letters to the Editor: Green Up Day had major effect on former Vermonter

Posted on May 4, 2017 |
By Jeff Nicklas

My family and I moved to East Middlebury in 1965. Three more siblings were born there. We lived around Middlebury, Salisbury, and Leicester until 1974. For some reason those nine years in Vermont simply won’t leave me. I think about Vermont in some way pretty much every day.

Letters to the Editor: State deal for teachers smart

Posted on May 4, 2017 |
By George Jaeger

Three cheers for Angelo’s trenchant editorial of April 27 strongly urging Democrats not to dismiss, but to embrace Governor Scott’s proposal to create a state-wide healthcare contract for teachers and school employees which, it is estimated, could save us taxpayers — hold on to your chairs — a cool $26 Million. All the more so since this seems to be a one-time opportunity.

Gregory Dennis: Imaginary Trump talk warms up

Posted on May 4, 2017 |
By Greg Dennis

I recently had a chance to sit down (in my imagination) with President Donald Trump to discuss the Peoples Climate March in Washington, D.C.

The march brought an estimated 200,000 people to the streets of the nation’s capital to protest Trump Administration policies that push for burning more coal, oil and gas. There were scores of similar events around the globe, including in Montpelier.

Letters to the Editor: All must protect migrants' rights

Posted on May 4, 2017 |
By Jack Mayer and Emily Joselson

“About 12 years ago, I made a house call — really a farm call— on the newborn twins of the wife of an undocumented Mexican farmworker. I’d cared for them in our community hospital and connected them with public health nursing and breast-feeding assistance. This family also had an 8-year-old boy in the local school, who was performing beautifully and beloved by all. His father was a pious, hardworking laborer on the dairy farm. Had he been documented, he would be a “model citizen.”

Letters to the Editor: Join Green Up and give Bridport roads a break

Posted on May 4, 2017 |
By Sheila Huestis

Open letter and invitation to you who travel and feel the need to discard your trash on Middle Road (or any road) in Bridport. The banks on this road are steep, making it very difficult for the volunteers on Green Up day to pick up your trash! Please stop! You can also stop in at the Town Clerks office any time and pick up green bags and help pick up after yourself. To the Twisted Tea person, please dispose of your cans properly, not on the side of the road.

Thanks.
