Gov. wrong on dentist tax

Posted on April 7, 2011 |
By Emerson K. Lynn

The Vermont House rejected the Shumlin administration’s effort to raise almost $4 million by assessing a 3-percent provider tax on dentists. Instead, legislators opted to raise the same $4 million through a 26-cent tax on a pack of cigarettes. The governor is pushing the Senate to restore the tax on dentists, saying it’s misguided to punish people with an addiction.

Around the bend: Opening up a frugal can of worms

Posted on April 7, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

Given the current tough economic times — otherwise known at our house as the New Normal — we’ve had to cut way back on our impulse purchases. As I’ve told my husband, Mark, no more going out to the store for milk and coming home with a new tractor.

This need to be financially responsible comes more easily to me than to him; I’m a tightwad by nature. That’s probably why it took me so long to make my latest purchase. After months of hemming and hawing, last week I finally decided to just take the leap and do it.

Editorial: Corporations dodging taxes while others pay

Posted on April 4, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Talking about cutting taxes on the wealthiest few, General Electric, one of the nation’s largest corporation, made headlines by reaping near-record profits — and paying no corporate income taxes. None. Zip. In fact, on worldwide profits of $14.2 billion, of which $5.1 billion was earned in the U.S., they claimed a tax benefit of $3.2 billion.

So while you’re finishing up your tax returns before the April 15 deadline, chew on that for a while.

Clippings: A fishy story on origin of April Fool's

Posted on March 31, 2011 |
By Trent Campbell

The history of April Fool’s Day is, according to the briefest of Internet searches, a bit muddy. Many sources trace it back to Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales in the late 1300s, some back even further to when Noah released one of his doves too early, before the flood waters had receded. These claims, however, are way off. Friday marks just the 200th anniversary of April Fool’s Day. And I should know because the true origins of the holiday are, I am foolishly revealing here for the first time, linked directly to my Norwegian ancestors.

Politically Thinking: NRC decision doesn't end VY saga

Last week’s decision by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to extend Vermont Yankee’s operating license for another 20 years does not end the controversy over the future of the plant.

Of American exceptionalism

In a forceful and uplifting speech Tuesday night, President Barack Obama articulated the scope of America’s involvement in Libya in language clear enough for all but the daft or deliberately contrary to understand.

Between the Lines: Confessions of a Vermontaholic

Posted on March 31, 2011 |
By Gregory Dennis

My name is Greg and I am a Vermontaholic. This is my story.

As with so many other Vermontaholics, my addiction started in childhood.

They say that parents should keep their kids away from the hard stuff, and that was certainly true in my case. I’m one of many for whom, at a tragically young age, the gateway drug was skiing.

I could handle it OK when my parents took me skiing near home in central New York State. Even in the Adirondacks at Whiteface and Big Tupper, I didn’t get addicted.

Natural gas pipeline would strengthen area's economy

Posted on March 31, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

A utility’s proposal to explore the possibility of extending a natural gas pipeline from Burlington to Vergennes and into Middlebury should be greeted with enthusiasm by residents, businesses and all who want to see greenhouse gases diminished. That’s because natural gas is less expensive than other fuel options, pollutes less, and reduces Vermonters reliance on foreign oil.

Editorial: Cutting through the partisan lies

Posted on March 28, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Try to explain why this statement is false: “Cutting the federal deficit will create jobs.”

The simple answer is because government spending creates jobs by putting money in the hands of those who will spend it, thus priming the economy.

Cutting government spending, as Republicans in Congress want to do, will create the opposite effect of what they are saying will happen — an important point for America taxpayers and voters to understand.

Clippings: Should U.S. education follow China?

Posted on March 24, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

Americans are up in arms because while Shanghai, China, achieved first place across the board on the 2010 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), U.S. high school students tested 31st out of 65 economic regions in mathematics, 23rd in science, and 17th in reading. President Obama referred to the issue as “our generation’s Sputnik moment” and U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan labeled it “an absolute wake up call for America.”
