Guest Editorial: Recent history should dissuade entry into Syria

Posted on June 25, 2012 |
By Haviland Smith

It is a simple fact that many “countries” in the Middle East are not really nation-states as they are understood to be in the West, but rather often unhappy agglomerations of ethnic, tribal, sectarian and even national groups having little in common.

Instability in the Middle East can be measured by the extent of tribal, sectarian, ethnic and national frictions in any “country” in the region.

Editorial: Town faces tough sledding on new municipal building

Posted on June 21, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The Middlebury selectboard has some tough sledding if they are to convince town taxpayers to shell out $6 million to $10 million for a new municipal building to house a safe, some town records, a gym and a half-dozen offices. That’s primarily because it comes right on the heels of a new $4.65 million fire station that voters approved this past March, and a couple years earlier, about $7 million hit for the new Cross Street Bridge (the latter of which was an absolute necessity and has proven its weight in gold.)

Clippings: A reminder that people are awesome

Posted on June 21, 2012 |
By Andrea Suozzo

Twenty miles into a bike ride on the Champlain Islands last Saturday, my left knee developed a slight tingle.

At that point, I should probably have reconsidered the next 34 miles of the ride. Hopped off by the side of the road, walked for a while, sent my friends on without me and asked them to swing back and pick me up when they were done.

But as I’ve discovered over the years, I have a persistent inability to admit weakness and a competitive streak that keeps me going long after I should have stopped to recuperate.

Politically Thinking: Republican candidates absent

Posted on June 21, 2012 |
By Eric L. Davis

When the filing deadline for Vermont candidates passed last week, something noteworthy in the political history of Addison County happened: not a single Republican filed for either of the county’s seats in the Vermont Senate.

Between the Lines: From a master ecologist, life everlasting

Posted on June 21, 2012 |
By Gregory Dennis

Bernd Heinrich opens his exploration of the natural way of dying, “Life Everlasting,” with a quote from Khalil Gibran that sets the tone for the rest of this absorbing work:

“If you would know the secret of death you must seek it in the heart of life.”

It’s death, and its life-giving virtues, that are the focus of this 16th volume from Heinrich, a Hinesburg resident and professor emeritus at UVM.

Editorial: A light in the darkness

Posted on June 14, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

On Tuesday, Gov. Peter Shumlin gave a hug to Starksboro resident Kathy Duclos after a staged signing of a bill that seeks to revamp how the state conducts its search and rescue operations. The bill was sparked by the death of 19-year-old Levi Duclos, a Middlebury resident, who died of hypothermia three miles from the trailhead of a popular hiking area in Ripton. While his family searched into the night for the missing hiker, state police took the call at approximately 8 p.m. that winter night, but failed to send out a search party until the next morning.

Clippings: Best effort can at times fall short

Posted on June 14, 2012 |
By John Flowers

We work hard at this twice-weekly to keep our readers informed about goings-on in Addison County. That means talking to people face-to-face or by phone, or hearing from them at meetings.

But there are times we can’t get to a meeting, so we have to follow up by phone with the people who are affected and the sources we have cultivated over the years.

It’s a formula that usually works. Sometimes it doesn’t.

Around the Bend: Growing cranky in the garden

Posted on June 14, 2012 |
By Jessie Raymond

Every spring, in anticipation of my vegetable garden, I forget an important point: Gardening is neither easy nor particularly enjoyable.

Don’t believe those dreamers who insist that growing vegetables is a spiritually transforming experience. Sure, we all have those brief moments of awe when a bean seedling first breaks through the concrete crust of Addison County clay. And who doesn’t swoon over the taste of a juicy, just-picked tomato, still warm from the afternoon sun?

Whatever. Most of the time, gardening is the pits.

Editorial: An enlightening document

Posted on June 11, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

It’s not surprising the draft of the updated Middlebury town plan has sparked the strong reactions it has. That’s because the planning commission did a significant rewrite, and added much depth and substance to the document.

That rewrite made it lengthy: 199 pages, not to mention another 24 pages of maps and charts and footnotes.
