Ways of seeing: Labels sometimes mask the deeper story

You might have seen in the news that citizens of Rutland are struggling with the prospect of resettling refugees from Syria into their community. I hope Rutlanders will find a way to work with the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program (VRRP), and when Syrians arrive in central Vermont I hope I can personally reach out to help them resettle here.

Clippings: N.C. Senator provided the template

Posted on June 1, 2016 |
By John S. McCright

The controversy now about the North Carolina law denying human rights for transsexuals reminds me of a Tar Heel politician of a generation ago who, quite successfully, advocated for laws and policies designed to restrict the rights of a vast number of human beings and even deny their humanity. I’m sure there are a lot of readers who remember, and shudder at hearing, the name Jesse Helms.

Jessie Raymond: Goats crossed the road, and the line

Posted on June 1, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

Jessie's column Jasper 3 cmyk.jpg

Posted on June 1, 2016 |
By Bernice Borkman

I have a pressing problem that I know for certain concerns many senior citizens seeking apartments: outrageous rents.

I have been looking over a year for an apartment I can afford.

Now in Addison, Rutland and Chittenden counties the cheapest one-bedroom apartments, without utilities, start at $1,000 per month and up.

What on God’s green earth is going on?

Gregory Dennis: When the call comes about mom

Posted on June 1, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

You know the call is going to come. If you’re a Baby Boomer with an aging parent, it’s inevitable.

When your mother is 92 and living on her own a thousand miles away, you know the news is out there in the unknowable future.

And then one Monday the phone rings and the future becomes a little more knowable.

“Greg, this is Audrey, your mother’s housekeeper. Miz Dennis is in the hospital and not doing very well.”

The eighth year of the Bridport Community Supper program has ended for the 2015-2016 winter season. Posted on June 1, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

As Porter Medical Center rights it ship under interim CEO Dr. Fred Kniffin, there is an exciting opportunity for the community to participate in the hospital’s future — and a pressing reason for the average resident to be increasingly engaged.

Posted on May 29, 2016 |
By Doug Hoffer

The unfortunate situation with the EB-5 program presents an opportunity to reflect on the State’s approach to economic development. Among other responsibilities, the State Auditor’s office examines various programs to determine whether they achieve the goals established by the legislature. That is, are we getting our money’s worth?
