Clippings: Dogsitting duties curb pet fantasies

Posted on April 28, 2011 |
By Andrea Suozzo

Every so often I become obsessed with the idea of getting a puppy.

This wouldn’t be so bad, except that my fantasies of dog ownership rarely factor in the true rigor of that sort of project. You see, I grew up with no pets, on the fifth floor of a 100-year-old apartment building in New York City (read: no elevator).

Between the lines: Getting real about local real estate

Posted on April 28, 2011 |
By Gregory Dennis

We began the Great Real Estate Adventure-Dilemma (GREAD) back in February.

For me, our new home would be the sixth place I’ve occupied in the past seven years. African herdsman move less often than I do.

Like all naïvely optimistic would-be homeowners, we were sure that we would find several great places to choose from.

Editorial: Budget quandary: To cut or tax?

Posted on April 25, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

On Friday, the Vermont Senate passed a $24.3 tax package as part of its $4.68 billion budget plan to fund state government next year. The increased taxes, which passed by a vote of 20-8, includes a controversial 53-cent tax hike on a pack of cigarettes as well as several taxes Vermonters will not see directly. We expect the House to tinker with it, but on the whole this proposal will sail through and get the governor’s signature. But what of next year? Will Vermont again mostly cut its way to a balanced budgets, or raise taxes?

Clippings: How does our tax burden stack up?

Posted on April 21, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

According to the heated rhetoric coming from certain quarters, United States citizens are laboring under a steadily increasing tax burden that is likely to bury us all under a mountain of debt and crush our hopes and dreams.

Around the bend: Nine minutes just too much to ask

Posted on April 21, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

When my life gets really busy, I fall back on my tried-and-true coping strategies: snapping at my family and keeping my shoulders clenched up around my ears. But sometimes even those aren’t enough to make me feel better.

Recently, I went in search of some real stress relief.

With little time lately for a proper yoga class, I settled for a shortcut I found on YouTube: a 9-minute guided relaxation led by a soft-spoken European woman. I like to call her Elsa.

More to the rail spur story

Posted on April 21, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

At first blush, the fact that today’s railways operate under many of the out-dated privileges granted them during their hey-day in the 19th century is astonishing, if not outrageous. How can it be that archaic federal laws oblivious to today’s environmental concerns, land trusts, conservation districts and other individual concerns are allowed to so completely trump state, town and individual rights?

Dear Pres: Take off the gloves

Posted on April 18, 2011 |
By Haviland Smith

Many American independents voted for Barack Obama in 2008 because they thought he was the smartest Democrat available. They put him in office. Given what we were facing in the aftermath of the incredibly profligate and counterproductive Bush presidency, smarts were what were needed.

Many voters figured he was smart enough to successfully lead the Democrats against what was bound to be a single-minded, ruthless Republican onslaught intent on retaking power in Washington.

Clippings: Twain's dilemma and untold stories

Posted on April 14, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Few have the conceit to seriously ponder how to gauge the measure of one’s life, and you can count me among them. But no doubt it is a topic near and dear to those in the twilight of life.

Politically Thinking: Air fare subsidies a worthwhile cut

Posted on April 14, 2011 |
By Eric L. Davis

Returning the federal budget to sustainability over the next decade will require a combination of cuts in discretionary spending programs, reforms in entitlement programs and increases in tax revenues. Many elected officials and interest group leaders believe that solidifying the nation’s finances can be accomplished with changes in only one or two of these areas. Democrats want to cut military spending and raise taxes on the wealthy, while Republicans want to cut domestic programs and reduce Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits.

Between the Lines: Forecast: More hard times for liberals

Posted on April 14, 2011 |
By Gregory Dennis

With the limited exception of those of us lucky enough to live in Vermont, this is a lousy time to be a liberal. And it’s not going to get any better.

After years of battling Republican Gov. Jim Douglas, Democrats and Progressives in the Legislature have the luxury of working with new Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin. While Shumlin has put the kibosh on increasing taxes for the super-rich — he knows that would be political poison in his first term — he has otherwise set a remarkably progressive tone.
