Around the Bend: Theft was strangely reassuring

Posted on January 26, 2012 |
By Jessie Raymond

It’s not easy being scatterbrained.

My mind is constantly running in different directions, and I forget things. Just keeping track of my car keys occupies a good portion of my brain each day, and the portion that’s left can’t handle the remaining workload. I forget not only what things I need to do, but also whether I have — or have not — already done them. You can’t imagine the trouble this gets me into.

Clippings: Romney not just one of the guys

Posted on January 26, 2012 |
By John McCright

Knowing that presidential candidate Mitt Romney would release his income tax returns this week, I was prepared to write a column pointing out that the Massachusetts Republican was not one of us. We all knew he was rich, but how rich?

Then I saw the numbers and it gave me pause. Sure, “Willard” (as it says on his 1040 tax return) Romney is a millionaire several times over. But the numbers I’m talking about are the ones provided by other candidates.

Editorial: Keystone victory is first step to ending special breaks for industry

Posted on January 23, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

When President Barack Obama rejected a permit for the controversial Keystone XL pipeline to carry oil 1,750 miles from the tar sands of western Canada to the refineries in Texas, it was more than a victory for Ripton environmentalist Bill McKibben against this one project: it was a rare victory against the special treatment the U.S. government has long given the oil industry.

It also signals the beginning of change, perhaps, in the county’s attitude when weighing the value of dirty energy against the health of the environment.

Between the lines: Getting older, still going like 60

Posted on January 19, 2012 |
By Greg Dennis

More than a dozen of us gathered for dinner on a cold Saturday night. Cassoulet simmered on the stovetop, and a fire in the wood stove warmed the room.

Some of us there had been close friends for decades. Others barely knew one another. But we were all united by one thing: We had been in the same college class or had come with someone who was in that class.

Politically Thinking: Welch travels across party lines

Posted on January 19, 2012 |
By Eric L. Davis

Last week, while Congress was in recess, Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., joined eight House colleagues on a trip to France, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. Guest Editorial: Attacking Iran is a bad bet

Posted on January 19, 2012 |
By Haviland Smith

It’s difficult not to notice that there is a growing crescendo here at home which appears to be encouraging the United States to attack Iran.

Backers of this campaign, at least until recently, have been limited to the Neoconservatives who would like us to invade everywhere and who got us into the Iraq invasion, parts of the Israeli government, and those American supporters of Israel who never question anything the Israelis do.

Posted on January 19, 2012 |
By Andrew Stein

It’s practically an indisputable fact of modern life that information is king. And thanks largely to the free flow of the U.S. Internet, we have access to it in unprecedented abundance.

The speed by which citizens of any socioeconomic class are able to access information, the quality of information they’re able to access and the ability to sort through vast layers of up-to-the second news is at an all-time high for Americans.
