Politically Thinking: McDonald a viable state candidate

Posted on October 27, 2011 |
By Eric L. Davis

Pat McDonald, the chair of the Vermont Republican Party, could well be the Republican candidate for governor in 2012. While she has not yet declared her candidacy, many Republicans are urging McDonald to enter the race. The other Republicans who have been mentioned as gubernatorial candidates have either not shown interest in a 2012 campaign (Brian Dubie and Randy Brock), or have decided to seek re-election to their current position (Tom Salmon).

Clippings: Law must keep pace with the cloud

Posted on October 27, 2011 |
By Andrea Suozzo

If you own a computer in this day and age, chances are you’re storing information in the cloud.

Let me rephrase: If you’ve ever shared photos on Facebook, ever sent an email using Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo, or ever transferred files using Dropbox, you have information stored on any number of third-party servers around the globe — termed “the cloud.”

Editorial: Closing Waterbury facility is a tough, but necessary, move

Posted on October 24, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Gov. Peter Shumlin’s decision to close the state hospital in Waterbury comes just in time to avoid wasting precious state dollars on repairs to an antiquated facility, built in 1890, that has needed to be shuttered for years. That it took a flood of disastrous proportions to prompt the decision is testimony to the ill affects of a political system in which protecting one’s own economic turf is more important than doing what’s right for patients or the state as a whole. It’s understandable, but a real obstacle when needed changes must be made.

Editorial: Lessons to learn from Cross St. Bridge's success, controversy

Posted on October 20, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

At the one-year anniversary of the opening of Middlebury’s Cross Street Bridge, it’s appropriate to reflect on its success — and on the controversy that preceded it.

The success comes from all corners of the community: from community leaders to town officials, business owners to commuters. Everyone not only thinks it has added an aesthetic beauty to the town (with its stately architecture, as well as opening up an even more spectacular view of the downtown, but the added convenience and safety features are crucial to the town’s viability.

Editorial: Clean Up: Another way to help

Posted on October 20, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Gov. Peter Shumlin’s call for a Clean Up Day this Saturday, Oct. 22, is a well-conceived statewide effort to encourage Vermonters to lend a helping hand to neighbors who are still recovering from Tropical Storm Irene’s destruction.

Clippings: Speech is protected, but jobs aren't

Posted on October 20, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Are you ready for some free speech?

Well, within limits. I would like to keep my job, be it ever so humble and modestly paid.

Well, I could just about stop there, and that would sum up the kerfuffle earlier this month about ESPN’s decision to remove Hank Williams Jr. and his trademark “Are you ready for some football?” opening from its Monday Night Football program.

Around the Bend: 'Touch' of technology doesn't help

Posted on October 20, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

Not long ago, I received a free hand-me-down iPod Touch. I was thrilled, not only because it had originally retailed for about $200 but also because I had never owned such a sleek, technologically advanced gadget. (Keep in mind I think remote car starters are magic; I thrill easily.)

But once I got over the simple elegance of the smooth flat screen, I honestly couldn’t think of a single reason to have it.

Between the Lines: Small-town life is a cut above

Posted on October 20, 2011 |
By Greg Dennis

Ken Jenks is the physician’s assistant at a medical clinic in Nucla, Colo.

Jenks, who appears in a compelling “New Yorker” profile of Nucla’s druggist, Don Colcord, grew up in Salt Lake City. But he’s become a connoisseur of small towns.

Living in a small town, he says, means giving people more latitude.

Editorial: A tough lesson to learn, again

Posted on October 13, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

On the tenth anniversary of the war in Afghanistan last Friday, a loyal group of protestors stood on the Bristol green for their weekly ritual — making a statement against war because they feel it’s important to not let this nation’s participation in that war go unchallenged.

Clippings: Trying to play ball with today's teens

Posted on October 13, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

Two weeks ago the Addison Central Teen Center in Middlebury almost had to close for a routine board meeting. The number of volunteers is so low that the director wasn’t going to be able to staff the center during the board’s meeting he was to attend.

So when my fiancée Mairead, who regularly volunteers there, asked me to help out, I said, “Sure, why not?”
