Sanders should appear on ballot

Posted on June 10, 2015 |
By Frank H. Russell

Wow. In my 88th year I shall (may) have the opportunity to vote for a truly Independent presidential candidate, the honorable Sen. Bernie Sanders, a genuine man of and for the people, with a social consciousness that could save this country.

We need a leader with ideas and solutions. Sen. Sanders is that leader — his record speaks for itself. He is the right man, in the right place, at the right time.

Hopefully the voters will not miss this wonderful opportunity to carry him to the White House.

Businesses wait for natural gas

Posted on June 10, 2015 |
By Geoffrey Conrad

Those of us in the Middlebury business community who own or operate a facility that is currently dependent on fuel oil and/or propane have been waiting patiently for the arrival of natural gas to our area. The economic benefits are substantial and will result in substantially healthier bottom lines. As we see operating costs, property taxes and the minimum wage rise, these utility savings will enable us to stay competitive in the region and continue to be a vibrant contributor to our area’s economy.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Brandon, for paving Route 7 from McDonald’s to Champlain Street as well as the other paving projects being done. What a pleasure it is now to drive and not run into potholes and the like on Route 7.

The crosswalks being painted early are also very nice. Brandon is really starting to shape up. Great job and THANK YOU again.

Editorial: Finding virtue in adversity

Posted on June 8, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Bill Finger tells a cautionary tale of the railway construction that will tear up Middlebury’s downtown, starting in the spring of 2016.  It is a tale of adversity that must be overcome. The challenge, he posits in a story on Page 1, is how well we manage that adversity.

State treasurer's climate change message fell on deaf ears

Posted on June 8, 2015 |
By Fran Putnam

Last week in Dallas, Vermont State Treasurer Beth Pearce attended ExxonMobil’s annual meeting and spoke in support of a shareholder proposal to limit the company’s greenhouse gas emissions. Our treasurer spoke about the climate impacts that Vermont faces and that “climate change poses real financial risks.”

Mount Abe, Bristol Elementary budgets deserve support

Posted on June 8, 2015 |
By Allison Sturtevant

Please vote YES for the operating budgets for Mount Abraham Union High and Bristol Elementary schools.

I have been present at almost all of the BES, Mt. Abe, and supervisory union boards and executive committee meetings since Feb. 9. I have heard the difficult conversations between the boards and community members. I have personally dissected and analyzed the budgets in great detail.

VUHS spending plan is still unaffordable to some

Posted on June 8, 2015 |
By Elizabeth Armstrong

With all the claimed cuts in the Vergennes Union High School budget, why am I paying more taxes?

I am still insisting that a cost of $10,000 per student is fair. Vermont is the highest rate charged per student for education.

Voters send message, schools respond with difficult choices

Posted on June 3, 2015 |
By Angelo Lynn

Back on March 3, voters in Bristol and Vergennes sent clear messages to their respective union high school school boards to reduce school spending further than the budgets proposed at Town Meeting. Boards trimmed a little, but in subsequent votes in April, voters again rejected the Mount Abraham Union High School, as well as the VUHS budget. After further reductions in both budgets, voters go to the polls next week for a decisive third vote.

Jessie Raymond: Live, Love, Laugh at Pinterest

Posted on June 3, 2015 |
By Jessie Raymond

We’re getting ready to put in a mudroom at our house. Thank goodness I found Pinterest before we started.

Pinterest, if you haven’t heard of it, is a website that works like a virtual bulletin board, gathering images from across the web that you can “pin” to your own board, based on your interests — mudrooms, in my case.
