VERGENNES — Vergennes police cited two drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol between Feb. 12 and 18, one of them underage and the other for refusing to submit to DUI testing.

On Feb. 12 an officer on patrol saw a car with five youths in it acting suspiciously while it was rolling down Main Street before it stopped in the middle of the road briefly and then backed up into a driveway. The officer followed the car into the driveway and allegedly saw open containers of alcohol and signs of impairment on the part of the driver, a 17-year-old juvenile from Bristol.

Police allege the driver’s blood-alcohol content tested at 0.93 and cited him for DUI; the legal limit for driving is 0.08. They also issued the driver and all four passengers court diversion paperwork for consumption of alcohol by a minor.

On Feb. 17 police stopped a car for speeding on Route 7 and cited its driver, Samuel W. Webb, 50, of Waltham, for DUI refusal. Police also ticketed him for speeding and possession of an open container of alcohol.

In other action between Feb. 12 and 18, Vergennes police:

On Feb. 12:

•  Accepted a wallet found by a Vergennes resident and called Bristol police to contact a resident of that town, who in turn picked it up from Vergennes police.

•  Dealt with a report of a cell phone stolen after it was left at a Main Street business. After receiving the complaint police called the phone and discovered another customer had taken it by mistake, and the phone was returned to its owner.

On Feb. 13 dealt with a complaint from a man that his wife had left their children, 6 and 8, alone, at least briefly, while she ran an errand. Police found her and ticketed her for driving without a license and then calmed an argument between the parties.

On Feb. 14 helped Hinesburg police by finding a man in Vergennes.

On Feb. 15:

•  Helped Williston police by pulling over a vehicle for which that department had issued a warning on erratic driving; city police found no problem.

•  Checked out a suspicious vehicle behind a Main Street business and discovered two men with drug paraphernalia; this incident remains under investigation.

On Feb. 16:

•  Took a report from a Weybridge resident that a license plate had been stolen from a vehicle.

•  Accepted for insurance purposes a report of a Shaw’s Supermarket fender-bender.

•  Helped the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad with two calls at Hillside Drive apartments; in the first VARS took an ill woman to Porter Hospital, and in the second VARS took a person who had overdosed on drugs, but was ultimately OK, to Porter.

•  Received a tip about illegal drug activity in the area.

•  Calmed a verbal domestic dispute on North Street.

•  Cited Jason Vorsteveld, 23, of Panton for driving with a criminally suspended license, after a Panton Road traffic stop.

On Feb. 17:

•  Took a distraught man to Porter to meet with the Counseling Service of Addison County; police said he had tried to hide in a Shaw’s storeroom.

•  Looked unsuccessfully for a drunken man who tried to buy alcohol at the liquor store on North Main Street and then drove off.

On Feb. 18:

•  Checked out a report of two people arguing on a South Water Street sidewalk; police found them on Comfort Hill and determined there was no problem.

•  Responded to a complaint that a man was too close to a woman in violation of a court order, but determined that no such order existed.
