VERGENNES — Vergennes police are reminding residents and visitors that the city’s wintertime ban on parking on city streets takes effect Thursday, Dec. 1, and runs through March 31.

Cars may not be left on city streets between the hours of 2 and 6:30 a.m. In recent years the city council increased fines for offenses, and cars are subject to being towed.

Vergennes police officers on Thursday last week went around in the evening and placed notices on cars parked downtown reminding vehicle owners of the city ordinance.

In other action between Nov. 21 and 27, Vergennes police:

•  On Nov. 21 warned a motorist on Route 7 to drive more carefully, action taken after receiving a tip from another driver.

•  On Nov. 21 stood by a disabled vehicle on Route 22A in Panton until a wrecker arrived; police were alerted the vehicle had lost a tire by another driver.

•  On Nov. 21 helped Vermont State Police at a domestic dispute on Route 22A in Panton.

•  On Nov. 21 helped a man retrieve his birth certificate from an uncooperative ex-girlfriend.

•  On Nov. 21 cited Grace P. Deming, 22, of Addison for driving under the influence of alcohol after she allegedly failed a sobriety test on Main Street; police said due to a malfunction they had to test her blood-alcohol content at VSP barracks at New Haven, where the test read at 0.51, lower that the legal limit of 0.08. However, with the time expired before the test police alleged she was under the influence when driving.

•  On Nov. 22 checked the welfare of a city resident who was possibly threatening to harm herself and determined she was OK; police acted on behalf of the Howard Center in Burlington.

•  On Nov. 22 helped round up sheep that had escaped from the Ferrisburgh Solar Farm on Monkton Road.

•  On Nov. 22 on behalf of VSP told a New Haven man not to burn papers on his driveway.

•  On Nov. 22 helped a driver whose car ran out of gas at the intersection of School and Green streets.

•  On Nov. 23 met with a man and woman who said her ex was harassing her and sending her lewd messages via phone; VSP helped city police by warning a Bridport man to stop.

•  On Nov. 23 helped the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad at Clark’s Nursing Home on North Street.

•  On Nov. 23 dealt with an unlocked Main Street door found while on after-hours foot patrol.

•  On Nov. 25 cited Jennifer Lowell, 35, of Hinesburg for DUI after a tip from a motorist that she was allegedly driving erratically on Main Street. Police allege her blood alcohol content tested at 0.171.

•  On Nov. 26 calmed a man and woman arguing on Main Street.

•  On Nov. 26 were told a man was missing from a Walker Avenue residence; he was found playing poker in an acquaintance’s garage.

•  On Nov. 27 cited Kathleen Ayers, 48, of Middlebury for DUI-drugs and violation of conditions of release, actions taken after Ayers called police and asked for help getting into her locked car, which was parked on School Street. Police allege that Ayers admitted she drove the car there. City police also said that when notified Bristol police arrived and also cited Ayers for violating her conditions of release, which included not driving, and that they were informed by an Addison County Sheriff’s Department deputy that Ayers had been recently cited for DUI.
