Maple Run half-marathon lures a big field

MIDDLEBURY — About 516 individuals and 77 relay teams competed in the eighth annual Middlebury Maple Run this past Sunday under cloudy skies, temps in the low 50s and a steady drizzle later on in the morning. It was the first rainy day of the event’s eight-year history, but runners stayed cool and fast times prevailed.

Lee Berube, 25, of Syracuse, N.Y., ran away with the race finishing the 13.1-mile course in 1:13:47, an average pace of 5:38 per mile on what is considered a relatively hilly course. The first female, and second place finisher overall, was Phoebe Novello, 22, of Windsor, Vt., with a time of 1:21:18. Third place was Quinn Parker, 22, of Hampton, N.H.

“Despite the rain and cool temperatures, everyone seemed to have a great time, again, and our volunteers were troopers who kept the runners hydrated and their spirits high with lots of cheering and encouragement,” said co-race coordinator Sue Hoxie. “We were down a bit off our of registration of 800, but that’s not atypical of any race, particularly one in which the forecast is for a rainy, cool day. But overall, our numbers were good, it was very organized and seemed to go off without a hitch.

“We’re looking forward to doing it again next year!”

For complete results go to coolrunning.com, and look for Middlebury Maple Run Half Marathon, or just click here.
