ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police are investigating a July 12 swimming pool accident in Addison involving an 18-month-old child.

Police said it was at around 6:23 p.m. on Sunday that they and other emergency responders were called to a medical emergency at a home at 1603 Jersey St. in Addison. Upon arrival, they learned that an 18-month-old girl had been found unresponsive in a pool. Fortunately, family members had administered CPR and successfully revived the child, according to police.

The investigation has thus far revealed that the child had wandered out the back door of the home and into a fenced-in back yard; a gate had been left open, police said. The child walked through the gate, climbed up a ladder and ended up in the four-foot-deep pool, according to police. A short time later, members of the family noticed the child was not accounted for and ran outside to find the child floating in the pool and unresponsive, police said.

While en route, authorities learned the child had been revived and was breathing on her own, according to police. Vergennes Area Rescue Squad transported the child to UVM Medical Center for precautionary reasons and the child was held overnight at the hospital for observation.

Police said on Monday they were still investigating.
