MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on July 7 responded to two separate incidents involving men either threatening to use a firearm, or publicly displaying one.

Police first investigated a report of a man who had allegedly threatened to shoot people outside of the Champlain Farms store on Court Street. Police said the man left the store and went back to his home, where authorities took him into custody and took him to Porter Hospital to be evaluated by Counseling Service of Addison County officials. Police said they found no weapon on the man, nor in a backpack he had been carrying at the store.

The second case involved a report of a man allegedly “behaving in a threatening manner with a shotgun” in the Lindale Trailer Park. Police said the man told them he had been carrying the shotgun “due to threats” that had allegedly been made against him. Police said the man told them he had no intention of using his weapon, though authorities cautioned him not to carry the shotgun in the neighborhood.
