Vergennes Police Log: Alcohol a factor in many incidents

VERGENNES — A variety of incidents kept Vergennes police busy between Aug. 18 and 24, many of them alcohol-related, including driving while under the influence of alcohol, underage drinking, and a noise disturbance.

During that seven-day period, Vergennes police:

•  On Aug. 18 checked the welfare of a Main Street resident and determined she was OK.

•  On Aug. 18 calmed an arguing School Street couple.

•  On Aug. 18 were asked by Northlands Job Corps personnel to issue a no-trespass order against a former student, a task eventually done by Burlington police.

•  On Aug. 18 were told by an employee of an online dating service that an area resident had posted a suicide threat on the site; police eventually determined the individual lived in Addison, and Vermont State Police went to check on his well-being.

•  On Aug. 18 issued court diversion paperwork to four Northlands Job Corps students for underage drinking.

•  On Aug. 18 found a teenage girl at a friend’s home on behalf of a worried parent.

•  On Aug. 19 made sure an apparently homeless man had a place to stay for the night.

•  On Aug. 19 responded to a two-car accident at the intersection of Main and Maple streets; there were no injuries, but fire and rescue personnel also responded. The cars were moderately damaged.

•  On Aug. 19 warned a woman on First Street after a report that a child had been allowed to drive a car; the woman admitted she had permitted a four-year-old to help steer her car for a couple hundred feet, police said.

•  On Aug. 19 checked a South Water Street barking dog complaint, but found no problem.

•  On Aug. 20 helped the city clerk’s office by serving paperwork to a Third Street resident.

•  On Aug. 20 accepted a cell phone found on the city green.

•  On Aug. 20 checked the welfare of a Bowman Road man on behalf of a neighbor; police said he was fine.

•  On Aug. 20 after receiving an alert ticketed the operator of a tractor-trailer truck for failure to secure a load, failure to stay right, and defective equipment.

•  On Aug. 21 found jewelry left at the entry to the police station.

•  On Aug. 21 spoke to the parent of a child out late alone after dark.

•  On Aug. 22 stopped a tractor-trailer truck for speeding and ticketed its driver for failure to stay to the right, and ticketed its owner for failure to obtain a diesel tax permit and for failure to carry a registration certificate.

•  On Aug. 22 handled a minor accident between a truck and a car on Main Street.

•  On Aug. 22 pushed a disabled car off the traveled portion of Main Street.

•  On Aug. 22 issued court diversion paperwork to a female Northlands student for drinking alcohol.

•  On Aug. 22 cited Tara Dosado, 41, of Shoreham for DUI and for violating her conditions of release following an earlier August DUI case; those actions were taken after police saw her car weaving while southbound on Route 22A.

•  On Aug. 23 directed traffic during the city’s annual Vergennes Day celebration.

•  On Aug. 23 responded on behalf of VSP to a minor two-car accident in a Route 7 parking lot in Ferrisburgh.

•  On Aug. 23 followed up on a report but failed to find anyone shooting off fireworks on Second Street.

•  On Aug. 23 searched a Second Street home for a young woman reported to be drunk and missing from a Weybridge home; she was not there.

•  On Aug. 24 cited Michael Scott, 40, of Ferrisburgh for DUI after Scott failed to stop at a School Street stop sign.

•  On Aug. 24 went to the City Limits bar at about 2:30 a.m. to help employees disperse a crowd after receiving a noise complaint.

•  On Aug. 24 stopped a car passing through the city on Main Street at 4 a.m. for speeding and issued two tickets for possession of marijuana, two tickets for drug paraphernalia possession, and tickets for speeding and driving without a license.

•  On Aug. 24 responded to a First Street theft complaint and discovered it was a divorcing couple’s civil dispute about belongings.

•  On Aug. 24 calmed arguing Hillside Acres apartment neighbors.
