Middlebury Police Log: Vehicle break-ins continue to plague area

MIDDLEBURY — On Aug. 18 and 19 Middlebury police investigated the most recent in a rash of vehicle break-ins around town. Police reported more than 30 additional break-ins in which thieves stole, among other things, cash, a knife, registration plates, prescription drugs, jewelry and a wallet.

The targeted areas included Stonegate Drive, Washington Street Extension, Rogers Road, Fairview Circle, Buttolph Drive, Birchard Park, Cardinal Way, and Monroe Street. In most cases, the thieves targeted unlocked vehicles. Authorities continue to urge people to lock their vehicles and keep valuables out of plain sight.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•   Cited Christopher Sayers, 46, of Middlebury for driving with a criminally suspended license on North Pleasant Street on Aug. 18.

•   Cited Brian Hathaway, 26, of Rutland and Grover Pangburn, 39, of Hannacroix, N.Y., for simple assault, following investigation of a disturbance on Seymour Street on Aug. 18.

•   Responded to a report of a firearm being stolen from a Butternut Ridge Drive home on Aug. 19.

•   Warned a man about putting personal trash into a business’ Dumpster on Court Street on Aug. 19.

•   Investigated a suspicious persons complaint on Valley View Road on Aug. 20.

•   Responded to a domestic disturbance on Elm Street on Aug. 21.

•   Arrested Cathy L. Fleming, 40, of Bristol on an escape warrant on Aug. 21. Police said Fleming had turned herself in.

•   Investigated a report of a two-car collision with injuries on Court Street on Aug. 21.

•   Assisted state police with a traffic crash on Route 30 in Cornwall on Aug. 22.

•   Checked on a man who was washing his car in the Kinney Drugs parking lot off Court Street on Aug. 22. Police said the man acknowledged having some mental health problems and said he had an upcoming appointment with counseling professionals.

•   Spoke with some Kirby Vacuum salespeople who had allegedly been vague in their marketing approach in the Pinewood Road neighborhood on Aug. 22.

•   Responded to a theft complaint in the South Street neighborhood on Aug. 22.

•   Responded to some Overbrook Drive residents’ concerns about a door-to-door salesperson on Aug. 22.

•   Cited Travis G. Popp, 36, of Middlebury for violating a restraining order on Case Street on Aug. 22.

•   Assisted a Ledgewood Court parent who was having problems with his child on Aug. 22.

•   Warned a South Village Green resident for violating the town’s noise ordinance on Aug. 22.

•  Investigated a report of someone allegedly missing from the Vermont Hard Cider “Ciderbration” on Exchange Street on Aug. 23. Police said the person was found at home.

•  Investigated a possible burglary and unlawful mischief on Schoolhouse Hill Road on Aug. 23.

•   Assisted with a “juvenile problem” at a Ledgewood Court residence on Aug. 23.

•   Responded to a domestic disturbance at a Court Street Extension residence on Aug. 23.

•   Assisted Vermont State Police with a drunk driving case on Route 7 in Salisbury on Aug. 23.

•   Responded to a report of a dog left in a car in the Washington Street area on Aug. 23.

•   Investigated a report of eggs being thrown at a vehicle parked on Monroe Street on Aug. 23.

•   Helped a man having a mental health crisis in the Stewart Lane area on Aug. 23.

•  Assisted the Porter Hospital Emergency Department with an out-of-control patient on Aug. 24.

•  Turned over, to a sober friend, a drunken man found walking down Seminary Street Extension on Aug. 24.

•  Assisted the Counseling Service of Addison County with a female patient having a mental health crisis on North Pleasant Street on Aug. 24.

•  Served a temporary restraining order on a person in the Case Street area on Aug. 24.

•  Assisted multiple human services agencies with a patient having a mental health crisis at Porter Hospital on Aug. 24.
