ADDISON COUNTY — A two-car crash on Route 7 a week ago Wednesday afternoon resulted in the highway being closed for a time.

Vermont State Police said at around 4 p.m. on May 21 a 1998 Subaru Outback driven by Carmen Rodriguez Chaparro, 40, of Salisbury was stopped on Route 7 while attempting to make a left turn when an unidentified vehicle directly behind her was distracted and swerved at the last moment to avoid colliding with Mrs. Rodriguez’s vehicle. In doing so, a trooper reports, no time or space was left between the stopped Subaru and the next vehicle in traffic — a 2003 Toyota Corolla driven by 54-year-old Rondi Whitney of Brandon. The trooper said Whitney was unable to avoid the collision and rear-ended the Subaru, causing a temporary shutdown of Route 7.

All drivers were wearing their seatbelts and avoided serious injury.

Both Rodriguez and Whitney were transported to Porter Hospital as a precaution but were later released.

Vermont State Police expressed appreciation to the rescue and fire department members who assisted quickly and professionally in traffic safety and helping reopen the roadway.

In other recent activity, troopers:

•  On May 20 at 2:29 p.m. went to a two-car crash in Bridport. Police report that a 2010 Cadillac CTS driven by Pamela S. Rafferty, 43, of Ticonderoga, N.Y., was stopped in a line of traffic on Route 125 at Market Road facing west, when a 2003 Subaru Baja driven by Claude L. Cousineau, 58, of Bridport traveled over the crest of a hill, approaching the Cadillac from behind. The trooper said Cousineau lost control of his car and it collided with the rear end of Rafferty’s Cadillac, pushing it off the road. Neither driver sustained any injuries, and both vehicles sustained minimal to moderate damage. Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Bridport Fire Department and Middlebury EMS.

•  On May 20 at 5 p.m. received a complaint of an assault on Meehan Road in Bristol. The trooper cited Eric Friend, 50, of Bristol for domestic assault.

•  On May 21 at 9:52 p.m. were dispatched to a residence on Hillside Drive in Starksboro for an alleged assault that took place earlier in the day. The trooper said his investigation led him to cite John Haskins, 42, of Starksboro for domestic assault.

•  On May 24 at two minutes past midnight stopped a motor vehicle driven by Peter D. Thibodeau of Bristol on Lower Notch Road in Bristol for allegedly committing multiple traffic infractions. The trooper cited Thibodeau for driving under the influence, second offense.

•  On May 24 at 6:34 p.m. responded to a two-car crash on Route 22A in Addison. Police report that Martha Sissian, 50, of Quebec was pulling onto Route 22A from Route 17W and didn’t see the Kia Sportage driven by Lisa Maxfield, 56, of Milton that was northbound on Route 22A. Sissian’s Jeep Patriot struck Maxfield’s Sportage, causing extensive damage to both vehicles. No injuries were reported, and both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. This accident is being investigated.

•  On May 26 at 7:11 p.m. responded to a home on Weisenbach Road in Monkton for a reported burglary in progress. Upon arrival at the scene police located Brendan E. Gleason, 45, of Dover, N.H. A trooper reported that his investigation indicated that Gleason had attempted to enter the residence without permission and that he had been residing on the property without permission. Police took Gleason to the New Haven state police barracks, where they cited him for burglary and unlawful trespass and then released him.
