Middlebury Police Log: Police seek driver involved in hit-and-run with bicycle

MIDDLEBURY — Police in Middlebury are on the lookout for a small vehicle that fled the scene of a collision with a bicyclist on South Main Street on Aug. 14. The bicyclist sustained minor injuries and was transported to Porter Hospital by the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association.

The vehicle was described as a small silver or gold older model passenger vehicle, possibly a Buick. Anyone who has information on this case is asked to call Middlebury police at 388-3191.

In other recent activity, Middlebury police:

•  On Aug. 12 served a no-trespass notice on someone who was not wanted at a John Graham Court residence.

•  On Aug. 12 responded to a collision on Main Street that resulted in property damage.

•  On Aug. 12 investigated an alleged shoplifting incident at a Court Street business. The matter is under investigation.

•  On Aug. 12 investigated a report at Sarah’s Way that a person was allegedly shoveling rocks and debris onto the railroad tracks, which a caller said could be done with the intent to damage them. The tracks and switch were checked, and police found no evidence of damage.

•  On Aug. 12 assisted in transporting a person to Porter Hospital who may have been overdosing.

•  On Aug. 13 transported a female located on Route 7 North to Porter Hospital after receiving a report that she had been attempting to cut herself.

•  On Aug. 13 opened an investigation into a burglary at a Shannon Street residence, where a television was reportedly stolen.

•  On Aug. 13 cited Katie Corey, 30, of Brandon with possession of narcotics after Middlebury police were called to Merchants Row when a bus driver called to report an unresponsive female whom he could not wake up. Corey refused treatment from rescue services and was later released into the care of friends and family members.

•  On Aug. 14 responded to a College Street incident that resulted in property damage.

•  On Aug. 14 responded to a North Pleasant Street apartment to find Donald Hagen Jr., 59, deceased. Police ruled out foul play but an investigation is ongoing.

•  On Aug. 14 dealt with some suspicious activity on East Main Street after receiving a call from an Indiana resident, who reported receiving a threatening communication from a Middlebury resident. Police contacted the Middlebury resident, who denied making threats and said he was pursuing a fraud complaint with the Indiana Attorney General’s Office.

•  On Aug. 14 checked the welfare of a child at a Washington Street residence, who was found to be OK.

•  On Aug. 14 received a call from a South Burlington woman who believed she had left her purse in the Marble Works parking lot. An officer searched the area but did not find it.

•  On Aug. 14 investigated a domestic disturbance at a Seminary Street residence after a female caller reported that her estranged husband was following her at a high rate of speed as she was en route to a friend’s house. Police found neither party harmed, and made referrals for both parties.

•  On Aug. 14 investigated a collision resulting in property damage on Route 7 South.

•  On Aug. 14 received a call from a parent whose juvenile child was refusing to return to a Rogers Road residence. The child eventually went home on her own.

•  On Aug. 14 responded to an East Main Street location where an intoxicated male was reportedly throwing things at a residence. The male was turned over to his mother.

•  On Aug. 15 investigated a suspicious vehicle on South Street, where a man was slumped over in a parked vehicle. He had fallen asleep.

•  On Aug. 15 conducted community policing at Fields Road.

•  On Aug. 15 responded to a collision that resulted in property damage on Seymour Street.

•  On Aug. 16 responded to Cross Street after a man reported his brother calling out for help. Police found the original caller suffered from mental health issues and that there was no incident concerning the brother to investigate.

•  On Aug. 16 investigated a report of a suspicious male on South Street Extension wearing a hat, jeans and a gray t-shirt, carrying a purple bag and waving his arms and “acting strangely.” Police could not locate the man.

•  On Aug. 16 recovered some lost property on Court Street.

•  On Aug. 16 issued a warning to a man who was burning garbage on North Forty Lane.

•  On Aug. 16 dispatched to Route 7 and East Main Street after receiving a report of a woman in the road yelling at vehicles. When police found the woman she told them she was not, and would not be, yelling at cars. She said she would stay out of the road.

•  On Aug. 16 went to McIntyre Lane to speak to a man who had reportedly run over the curb and stumbled when he got out of his car. The officer spoke with the man, who was not intoxicated.

•  On Aug. 16 transported a woman away from Route 7 traffic after receiving reports that she was lying in the middle of the road and staggering back and forth. The woman told police that she was not suicidal and declined any medical or mental health services. She was transported to Merchants Row, away from Route 7 traffic.

•  On Aug. 16 investigated a suspicious vehicle on Court Street; its window was smashed. The vehicle’s owner was located and advised that her husband had accidentally backed into a crane winch earlier in the day.

•  On Aug. 16 responded to an alarm activation on Munger Street.

•  On Aug. 16 assisted with a fully involved barn fire at Nop Brothers Farm on Route 7 South, just over the Salisbury town line as part of a mutual aid agreement.

•  On Aug. 16 referred to CSAC a Cross Street resident who reported a felon and drug activity in his building.

•  On Aug. 16 near midnight received a report of a drunken man following a female on Main Street. Officers found the man had been drinking but was not intoxicated, and they urged him to stay in his apartment for the night.

•  On Aug. 17 began investigating a report that the windshield of a car parked on Munson Road had been smashed.

•  On Aug. 17 received from some students a dog they found wandering around the college campus near College Street.

•  On Aug. 17 attempted to locate two dogs that had been chasing a mail carrier on North Pleasant Street, but did not find them.

•  On Aug. 17 fielded a report from a landlord that a former tenant had left drug paraphernalia in an apartment.

•  On Aug. 17 were told two people had been shot in the Counseling Service of Addison County’s Cross Street parking lot, a report that was unfounded. Police notified CSAC about the report.

•  On Aug. 18 while on foot patrol saw a man fall to the ground in front of Two Brothers Tavern and determined he had been punched by a companion. The victim said he didn’t want to pursue the matter, but police took the other man, whom they described as highly intoxicated, to Grace House to sober up.

•  On Aug. 18 received a report of an iPhone lost in the parking lot of a Middlebury business. Using tracking software the phone was located at the Sugar House Motel, where a person said he or she had found it. The phone was turned over to its owner.
