City woman charged with felony over sexual assault claim

VERGENNES — A Vergennes woman pleaded innocent on Monday in Addison County Superior Court, criminal division, to a felony charge of false swearing and a misdemeanor charge of giving false information to a police officer, after she allegedly made a false allegation that her husband had sexually assaulted her.

Middlebury businesses to get natural gas early

MIDDLEBURY — Three of the biggest institutions in Middlebury will begin to receive natural gas service before the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project pipeline is finished, Vermont Gas Systems announced on Wednesday.

Vermont Gas and NG Advantage LLC have begun construction of a so-called “gas island” consisting of a natural gas off-loading station and a small pipeline network that will distribute the gas to the Agri-Mark/Cabot cheese plant and the Vermont Hard Cider operations (both off Exchange Street) and Middlebury College.

Tractor trailer truck carrying whey rolls over in Cornwall

Store surveillance video may show robbery suspects

FERRISBURGH — Vermont State Police are looking for the public’s help in identifying the people in some store surveillance photos who are suspects in the theft of a credit card from a Ferrisburgh home.

On the evening of Aug. 31, state police received a report of a burglary at a home on Little Chicago Road in Ferrisburgh. The resident’s purse was stolen, which held photo identification, and debit and credit cards.

VUHS teacher seeks online votes to win $100,000 prize for school

VERGENNES — A Vergennes Union High School Spanish teacher has been chosen to represent Vermont in the running for a prestigious regional award that would bring with it a $100,000 award for her school. To win the award she must receive the most votes in an online poll that is open to all members of the public.

Public Service Board investigates pipeline costs

MONTPELIER — The Public Service Board on Thursday asked the Supreme Court to allow it to reexamine the merits of Phase I of the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project.

The board will evaluate whether Vermont Gas Systems violated board rules by failing to notify regulators of a 40 percent cost increase for the project in a timely fashion, and could reopen proceedings for the Certificate of Public Good it issued the project last December.

Vt. Gas OK'd to build near VELCO poles

MONTPELIER — The Public Service Board on Aug. 26 lifted a stay on soil-disturbing activity in certain areas of the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project, a 49-mile pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury and Vergennes.

The board ordered the stay July 25 after state officials became concerned that Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) utility poles near the pipeline route contained a dangerous chemical that could have leaked into water sources.

State handheld device ban to go into affect next month

VERMONT — Law enforcement agencies and interest groups like AARP Vermont are reminding drivers to get ready for a new law that will restrict use of cell phones and other handheld devices in vehicles traveling on Vermont roads. The new law will go into force Oct. 1.

Almost Home Market is for sale

BRISTOL — A town institution is for sale in Bristol, but the owners say business is doing just fine.

Almost Home Market co-owner Beth Marr said she and fellow owner Gary Smith are selling the store, which has been a fixture of Bristol’s North Street for a decade.

“My business partner is not able to fulfill his partnership because of illness and I never intended on taking it solo,” Marr said, adding that she wants to pursue other interests.

Cops investigate suspicious blaze in Monkton

MONKTON — Police are looking for information on what started a fire that destroyed a Monkton home this past Wednesday evening.

The Monkton Volunteer and Bristol fire departments  responded to a structure fire at 1226 Hardscrabble Road in Monkton at just before 6 p.m. on Sept. 3. When firefighters arrived on scene the entire structure was fully engulfed in flames.
