Hunters be aware: Please don't shoot collared bears

SEARSBURG — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is asking people hunting bear in southern Vermont to avoid shooting bears with yellow ear tags and radio collars during this fall’s hunting season. The bears are collared as part of an ongoing study on the effects of a proposed wind energy development within Green Mountain National Forest in the towns of Searsburg and Readsboro.

Opiate abuse driving more kids into foster care in Addison County

MIDDLEBURY — A growing substance abuse crisis continues to drive more children into foster care in Addison County, say state officials charged with caring for Vermont’s youngest citizens. And, as a result, the need for foster parents continues to also rise.

Laurie Mumley, who recruits and supports foster parents as resource coordinator for the Department for Children and Families, remembers that when she started at the Middlebury DCF office three years ago the recruitment posters dramatically proclaimed that there were 55 children in custody.

College to open observatory this weekend

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College Observatory and Middlebury Physics will again host stargazing open house nights this autumn. These Observatory events are scheduled for Friday evenings, Sept. 16 and Sept. 30, from 8-9:30 p.m. and are weather permitting.

Saturn and Mars will be in the evening sky on these dates. A variety of interesting stars, star clusters and nebulae will also be visible through the Observatory’s telescopes. The Observatory includes a 24-inch telescope in a dome and smaller telescopes on the roof.

Vergennes police make heroin bust

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Police Department has cited Kelly A. McEvoy, 46, of Vergennes for possession of what is estimated 10 bags of heroin.

In a press release, city police said McEvoy had the heroin in her possession during a roadside stop by a Vergennes police officer.

McEvoy is due to answer the charge in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, on Oct. 17.

State set to finalize lake cleanup plan

ST. ALBANS — The cleanup of Lake Champlain returns to the spotlight as the state finalized the first phase of a plan to reduce the amount of phosphorous reaching the lake by 34 percent over the next 20 years.

The reduction is required under the TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) finalized earlier this year by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The first phase of the plan involves the creation of statewide programs and permits. It will end in 2017.

CORNWALL/SALISBURY — The charred remains of the covered bridge that crossed Otter Creek between Salisbury and Cornwall smoldered early Sunday evening more than 24 hours after a fire of unknown origin had quickly engulfed and consumed the picturesque and historic span.

FEMA helps Brandon, Ripton pay for Irene damage

BRANDON/RIPTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency in August awarded the state of Vermont’s Division of Emergency Management & Homeland Security more than half a million dollars to pay the federal share for projects tied to Tropical Storm Irene, which hit Vermont five years ago.

Among the six towns that won awards through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program were Brandon and Ripton.
