Doyle's bedtime book brings Vermont farming to life

MONKTON — Last Resort Farm’s Eugenie Doyle has been farming for over three decades and writing poems, essays and stories for almost as many years. Her latest work, the award-winning picture book “Sleep Tight Farm,” celebrates the farming life.

Best read, as the Monkton resident suggests, snuggled up with a little kid as a bedtime book, “Sleep Tight Farm” is a paean to the enduring rhythms of work and season that keep people rooted in the Green Mountain State.

City police bust trio for drug trafficking

VERGENNES — A routine traffic stop by Vergennes police this past Friday night led to the arrest of three Albany, N.Y., residents for heroin and cocaine possession and trafficking in heroin.

The three suspects — Robert Scales, 33; Jamel Sears, 30; and Kessiah Harvin, 26 — were lodged for the weekend at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility after police alleged they found 27 grams of powdered cocaine and 100 bags of heroin in a backpack in the trunk of a car driven by Harvin.

Abolitionist Frederick Douglass drew plenty of notice in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — On this past Feb. 1, President Donald Trump kicked off Black History Month by acknowledging a few black leaders, including Frederick Douglass. “Frederick Douglass is an example of someone who’s done an amazing job,” Trump noted, “and is getting recognized more and more, I notice.”

The President’s remark left many listeners bewildered. “Does he think Douglass is still alive?” many wondered. Does he even know who Douglass was, let alone what his “amazing job” was?

Champlain Valley Farmer Coalition reviews a year's success

VERGENNES — The Champlain Valley Farmer Coalition celebrated a year of accomplishments — including a national award — at its annual meeting on Jan. 26. The dinner at the American Legion Hall in Vergennes brought together close to 150 farmers and friends, including Gov. Phil Scott, newly appointed Secretary of Agriculture Anson Tebbetts and Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Alyson Eastman.

“Your presence tonight means you care about the environment,” said Tebbetts. “You’re working on it.”

Local World War II veteran honored by DAR

Three members of North Country Honor Flight along with Rena Trepanier and Joy Minns, members of the Seth Warner - Rhoda Farrand chapter of the DAR, showed up at his daughter’s home to present a few very special honors.

Community Foundation awards 'Small and Inspiring' grants: Local nonprofits recognized

ADDISON COUNTY — The Vermont Community Foundation has announced that it has given Small and Inspiring grants to 30 project across the state — including four in Addison County.

Four nonprofit organizations in Addison County received a total of $8,000 in Small and Inspiring grants from VCF. One of a number of competitive grant rounds at the Community Foundation, the Small and Inspiring grants program funds work that helps connect people to their neighbors, their land and their history in ways that strengthen community.

Brandon to host 1860s-style social

BRANDON — On Saturday, Feb. 11, there will be a unique community event in Brandon. St. Thomas & Grace Church is hosting an 1860s style “Social” to commemorate a similar event held in February 1862 at the Brandon Town Hall as a fundraiser for St. Thomas Church, which was under construction.

The “social” will feature children’s games and food and drink from the 1860s.

Vermont election chief says Trump wrong on illegal voting

MONTPELIER — Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos recently issued the following statement in response to continued assertions by President Trump that 3 million to 5 million people voted illegally in the November elections:

As the chief state election official for the state of Vermont, I am fiercely proud of the work that Vermont’s town clerks and local elections officials do to ensure the integrity of our elections.

Voting is a Constitutional right at the very core of our democracy.
