Seedsheet firm growing nationwide

MIDDLEBURY — Two-year-old Middlebury business Seedsheet is redefining local foods: Cam MacKugler, founder and CEO of Seedsheet, wants to put a Vermont farm on the properties of homeowners and apartment dwellers across the nation.

The company builds pre-seeded garden sheets to make gardening easier and more accessible for home gardeners. Seedsheet sources its seeds locally to bring Vermont gardens to windowsills, rooftops and backyards across the nation.

Rutland aldermen balk at refugee plan

RUTLAND — The Board of Aldermen came up just short Tuesday of granting a controversial citywide special election on whether to participate in a refugee resettlement program, but then endorsed a statement withholding the board’s support for taking in refugees, at least until more information is available.

A petition calling for a nonbinding referendum on whether the city should “decline to participate” in the resettlement of Syrian refugees had been signed by more than 5 percent of local voters.

U.S. Border Patrol at Swanton nabs child predator

SWANTON, Vt. — A U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) vehicle stop in Alburgh, Vt., and subsequent investigation by the USBP, helped the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) locate a wanted fugitive in Ottawa, Canada on June 30.  The suspect was fleeing child pornography charges in Illinois. 

CBSA arrested Adrien C. Peters, 23, of South Beloit, Ill., around 2 a.m. at an Ottawa motel.  U.S. and Canadian authorities are working to extradite Peters back to Rockford, Ill.

Rt. 125 construction continues on Middlebury Gap

HANCOCK — A paving project on Route 125 in Hancock going over the Middlebury Gap will cause disruptions in traffic patterns for the weeks of July 4 and July 11.

The project will begin at mile marker .767 and continue for 6.5 miles. The road will be paved and reclaimed, and elevation deficiencies will be corrected. There will also be guardrail and drainage improvements.

Revolutionary weekend set at Hubbardton Battlefield

HUBBARDTON — The only Revolutionary War battle fought on Vermont soil will be honored at the annual Battle of Hubbardton Revolutionary War Encampment weekend at the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site on July 9 and 10. Hundreds of reenactors will gather from all over the Northeast to present this colorful, full-scale history pageant, one of the largest Revolutionary War living history weekends in northern New England.

Rutland’s GE wins $1 billion military contract

Vermont Business Magazine In a development with implications for future work at GE Aviation Rutland, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) Thursday announced that the US Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC), based at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio, late Thursday awarded GE Aviation a $1 billion contract to continue development of its three-stream adaptive cycle technology for the Air Force’s next generation of fighter engines. The long-awaited announcement follows an intense competition for the project.

Festival comes back to the green

MIDDLEBURY — Since the first performance in 1978, Middlebury’s Festival on-the-Green has been a sign of summer, a place for the community to gather and a celebration of music and craft.

This year, the 38th annual Festival on-the-Green will be back at its home on the green in downtown Middlebury, and in this iconic setting performers will dazzle visitors once again.

After two summers in the Middlebury Recreation Park, the festival will return to the cherished place where memories have been made for many attendees.

4-H students compete in dairy judging contest

EAST MONTPELIER — Fifty-five 4-H’ers competed at the annual State 4-H Dairy Judging Contest, June 20, with the top 10 individuals in each age group winning rosette ribbons.

The host farm for the event, which was sponsored by University of Vermont (UVM) Extension 4-H, was Fairmont Farms — The Haven in East Montpelier. The 4-H’ers judged three classes of Holsteins from the farm’s herd as well as three classes of Jerseys that were transported to the farm for the competition by Billings Farm in Woodstock.
