ADDISON COUNTY — Every couple of minutes last Saturday afternoon, a crowd formed on the footbridge below the Otter Creek falls in Middlebury. The gathered people watched the groups of whitewater kayakers shooting the 15-foot drop over the falls and riding the current at the bottom. Then the crowd would disperse as the kayakers climbed out of the water, portaged back above the falls as another crowd gathered to watch them drop the falls again.

ADDISON COUNTY — Earlier this week, around 300 students at Mary Hogan Elementary School in Middlebury lined up for the H1N1 influenza vaccine, as some of the first doses of the vaccine trickled into Vermont.

The clinic came after last week’s announcement from the Vermont Department of Health that H1N1, informally dubbed the “swine flu,” had reached widespread levels in the state. This increased level of illness had been slower to hit New England than other parts of the country.

Route 116 pit hearing focuses on trucks

Posted on October 29, 2009 |
By John S. McCright

MIDDLEBURY — Is Route 116 north of the intersection with Quarry Road in Middlebury dangerous and would increased truck traffic from the proposed Fenn gravel pit, which would have an access road there, imperil others who use the road?

That was the crux of the discussion at a Monday evening hearing at which the Middlebury Development Review Board considered the application of Ronald and Susan Fenn to site a quarry on their property east of that stretch of Route 116, known locally as Case Street.

Editor’s note: In the first of two installments looking at slaughterhouses in Vermont, we examine what happens to the bulk of Vermont’s dairy cows — animals that are typically shipped out of state to be slaughtered. This Thursday, we’ll turn our attention to the growing market for local meats, the challenges facing smaller meat producers and slaughterhouses, and the creative solutions some farmers are exploring to make beef production more profitable.

Bristol conservationists look to protect bat habitat

BRISTOL — Conservationists in Bristol are looking to protect a 194-acre parcel of land in the northwest corner of town, which they say provides a large chunk of habitat for the Indiana bat, Vermont’s only federally endangered mammal.

The parcel would also extend the scope of the Waterworks, a 664-acre park conserved in the 1990s by the Watershed Center, a Bristol non-profit that converted the land from the one-time Vergennes City reservoir into a popular recreational and wildlife refuge on Plank Street.

Snow geese population at Addison refuge plummets

Posted on October 26, 2009 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON — The numbers of snow geese making annual stops at Addison’s Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area have dropped dramatically in the past decade, according to a Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department official who staffs the site.

This fall, the count of snow geese at the Route 17 location peaked at about 2,500, said department wildlife biologist David Sausville. That’s down from roughly 7,500 in 2006 and 2007 and from an estimated 20,000 in the year 2000.

Instead, Sausville said, more snow geese are congregating in corn stands in southern Canada and northern Vermont and New York.
