Mt. Abe faces unexpected $475,000 in spending cuts

BRISTOL — An accounting mistake sent up a major roadblock for the Mount Abraham Union High School board of directors this week, sending school board members and administrators back to square one to draft the high school’s 2010-2011 spending plan all while grappling with an unexpected additional $475,000 in necessary cuts.

Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Business Manager explained that an incomplete estimate in the early budget drafts put the “balance forward” number in the school budget much higher than is accurate.

Cow Power farms find reprieve in new rates

Posted on December 17, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — Three “Cow Power” farms that pioneered the generation of electricity from manure are suffering because they say the price they are paid for that power doesn’t meet the cost of producing it. Now they are getting some relief from the Public Service Board, which last week approved a temporary hike in that price.

Vergennes backs bus to Middlebury

Posted on December 17, 2009 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday reconsidered a decision made during budget deliberations earlier this year and voted unanimously to support a planned upgrade to the Addison County Transit Resource’s Tri-Town Shuttle.

Tuesday’s decision was made easier by a lower price tag: $1,350 instead of an earlier request of about $3,700. ACTR Executive Director Jim Moulton said that figure was pro-rated to represent the amount the city would owe this fiscal year based on the formula the agency used to charge towns that benefit from its services.

MONKTON — Stolen trees and wreaths are cutting into the amount of money Monkton Boy Scouts can raise this year during their annual holiday fund-raiser.

Troop 525, which is selling Christmas trees and evergreen wreaths at the Monkton Friends Church in Monkton Ridge, is eyeing nearly $1,000 in lost sales after seven or eight Christmas trees and more than 20 wreaths have gone missing.

Plea deal for Bristol man rejected

Posted on December 17, 2009 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County District Court Judge Cortland T. Corsones on Tuesday rejected, as too lenient, a proposed plea deal for a 71-year-old-man who was accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old, developmentally disabled Bristol girl last year.

At issue is a case involving Robert J. Boehmer, formerly of Bristol, who had been charged with lewd and lascivious conduct with a child, sexual assault and luring a child — all felonies — in connection with his alleged conduct with a Bristol girl whose family had taken in Boehmer, an acquaintance who had no other place to stay.

County recovers after windstorm

Posted on December 14, 2009 |
By John S. McCright and Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — As powerful winds swept through Addison County on Wednesday afternoon, Middlebury residents Mike and Marcia Adams kept a close eye on the wind gauge installed at their Munger Street home.

The wind was howling at a pretty steady 50 or 60 miles an hour, Mike Adams said. It was three or four o’clock in the afternoon by then. Outside, trees cracked and shimmied in the wind.

The gusts that plowed through Bennington, Rutland and Addison counties that afternoon toppled trees and power lines, leaving an estimated 19,000 Vermont households without power.

MIDDLEBURY — It was shaping up to be a dismal Christmas for Megan Wood, her partner Robert Costa, and their three young children.

The young family had recently moved back to their native Vermont after some extended time in Florida taking care of Wood’s ailing mother. When Wood’s mom died last year, they had come to a crossroads.

“There was nothing down there for me anymore,” said Wood, 25. “I was in a deep depression and decided I needed to get back with family.”
