MONKTON — Young Nathan Baldwin, all of three years old, races happily through the dairy barn on the farm formerly run by the Cota brothers, stopping to hug a few weeks’ old heifers. They nudge back playfully.

Outside the barn, some of dad Matt Baldwin’s mature Jerseys and Holsteins move through the grass, grazing peacefully. Looking south — past a small mountain of plastic-wrapped haylage —  green fields stretch toward the horizon, hugging Hogback Ridge to the east.

Posted on October 9, 2017 |
By Addison Independent

Sharrow cmyk1.jpg

BRISTOL — Vermont is often described as culturally homogenous, yet nearly a third of Vermonters have French Canadian ancestry. There is a long history of European immigration to the state’s urban centers, and recent years have brought waves of new Vermonters from Southeast Asia, North Africa and the Middle East.

In a free program presented by the One World Library Project, folklorist Gregory Sharrow will discuss these influences on Thursday, Oct. 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Memorial Library in Bristol.

By Lee J. Kahrs

BRANDON — A planned 100-acre solar project on farmland in Brandon is now owned by a different company, and, if it is built, will be 25 percent smaller than originally planned.

Davenport Solar filed a notice of intent to file a petition with the Vermont Public Utility Commission, requesting approval to build the project, which has been downsized to 15-megawatts from the original 20-megawatt plan. A copy of the letter was sent to the state Agency of Natural Resources, the town of Brandon and the Rutland Regional Planning Commission on Sept. 29.

Posted on October 9, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Just as Ferrisburgh is bringing interim zoning administrator Bonnie Barnes on board as a permanent employee, the town’s other top zoning official has stepped down.

Longtime Zoning Board of Adjustment Chairwoman Charlene Stavenow informed the selectboard informally in late August, and she made it official in September that she would be leaving her post after 30 years of service. The ZBA was set to meet on Wednesday and choose new leadership.

Stavenow, a real estate appraiser, has moved to Michigan, where one of her two daughters lives.

Northland students use open door to enter VUHS

By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Two Northlands Job Corps students entered Vergennes Union High School on Thursday afternoon through a door that had been left ajar, according to Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel, and, in Merkel’s words, approached and made two female VUHS students “uncomfortable.”

Vergennes police issued both Job Corps students no-trespass orders to stay off VUHS property and, according to Merkel, were terminated from the Northlands program later that afternoon.
