Nurses charge Porter Medical Center with labor law violations

MIDDLEBURY — A nurses union and management at Porter Medical Center are squaring off over a claim that hospital administrators aren’t following federal labor laws by sanctioning a nurse for perceived union activity and failing to follow the details of a contract.

In this, the first major dispute since the two-year-old Porter Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, AFT, and the hospital signed their first union contract, communication between the parties has been minimal.

State warns of bankruptcy scam

VERMONT — Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell is warning consumers who have filed or may soon file for bankruptcy of an emerging scam by impostors claiming to be the consumer’s attorney, the attorney’s partner or a member of their staff.

Bobolinks losing ground to solar, new policy could balance wildlife and renewable energy

NEW HAVEN — The bobolinks that nested in Vermont hayfields and grasslands this past summer are already winging their way toward winter homes in Argentina and Brazil. Environmentalists warn that when the birds return next spring some of their nesting habitat may have been swallowed up by the spread of solar arrays.

New Middlebury rental units offer affordability

MIDDLEBURY — Nearly a year and a half of construction on two new buildings and rehabilitation on three existing structures culminated in the formal dedication of 22 units of decent, affordable housing in the heart of Middlebury last Thursday.

More than 50 people gathered at the complex off North Pleasant Street at John Graham Court on Oct. 22 to dedicate the complex as the Peter Coe Village Apartments.

City seeks council member; renovations on tap

VERGENNES — Anyone who wants to replace Alderman Joe Klopfenstein on the Vergennes City Council has until Nov. 5 to send a letter of interest.

Klopfenstein recently announced he would step down at the end of November to teach veterinary science in Oregon.

Members of the Vergennes City Council said at their Oct. 13 meeting that they would like to have his replacement on the job in December. Whoever steps in would only be guaranteed a spot until Town Meeting Day and would have to decide in January whether to take out a petition to get on the ballot in March.

Public invited to discuss ANwSU unification

VERGENNES — The Addison Northwest Supervisory Union Act 46 Study Committee is inviting residents of the five union towns to an Oct. 28 forum to learn more and ask questions about potential ANwSU unification under Vermont’s new education law, Act 46.

Act 46 created more incentives than were available when ANwSU previously considered unification, and also for the first time created penalties for those that do not do so in a timely manner.

The forum on this coming Wednesday will run from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Vergennes Union High School library.

Middlebury College endowment surpasses $1 billion

MIDDLEBURY — The endowment of Middlebury College has inched above $1 billion in the past year.

The institution recently announced that on June 30 the value of Middlebury’s endowment stood at $1.10 billion — up $19.1 million from a year earlier. The change in the endowment from year to year is determined by investment gains and losses plus new gifts, minus the annual payout to help fund the operations of the institution.

Supreme Court to hear cases at Mahady Courthouse

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Supreme Court will travel to Addison County and sit in the Frank Mahady Courthouse on Wednesday, Oct. 28, to hear oral arguments in seven cases.

The public is invited to attend and watch the justices hear arguments in cases that could set legal precedents in Vermont. The arguments will begin at 9 a.m. at the courthouse, which is at 7 Mahady Court, just off Court Street behind Shaw’s supermarket.
