UD-3 board revises cutting strategy for 2011-12 budget

Posted on September 23, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — UD-3 school officials will explore the consequences of building a 2011-2012 spending plan that is 2 percent less than the current year’s budget.

It’s a sobering assignment, but somewhat less formidable than the task that had been mapped out for the UD-3 budget committee last spring. The panel and UD-3 administrators had been directed to develop a 2011-2012 budget reflecting a 3.5-percent decrease compared to current spending for Middlebury Union Middle School and High School. That would’ve translated into a $558,852 cut.

Water board says no once again to revote

Posted on September 23, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The Vergennes-Panton Water District Board again on Tuesday declined to accept Vergennes resident and Alderman Randy Ouellette’s petition calling for a second vote on the board’s $5.1 million plan for a major upgrade to its lakefront water plant.

On Aug. 4, Vergennes and Panton residents voted, 104-49, in 8 percent turnout, to approve a bond in that amount to fund what would be essentially a complete overhaul of the district’s 37-year-old plant on Lake Champlain, the first major project since its construction.

County girls canoe to confidence

MIDDLEBURY — When the five local girls who attended the Keewaydin Temagami summer camp in Canada last summer get together, they can trade stories for hours — their favorite boats (which they know by number), their best wildlife sightings, and the close calls they had in turbulent northern waters.

By Tamara Hilmes

MONKTON — For the entire week spanning between Oct. 8 and 16, the town of Monkton will be putting on its Monkton Creates community celebration.

Arts-infused events ranging from a pie contest to artist receptions will be taking place at various locations around town throughout the week. While many of the events are free and open to the public, proceeds from the various potluck dinners, dances and silent auctions that do charge a fee will go toward funding the restoration of the East Monkton Church, the Boro Schoolhouse and the Russell Memorial Library.

VERGENNES — At the annual meeting of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners last month in Albuquerque, N.M., Vergennes veterinarian Joe Klopfenstein was shocked when he was called up to the podium. He’d been named the 2010 Bovine Practitioner of the Year.

“It was totally unexpected,” said Klopfenstein, who owns Vergennes Large Animal Associates and who last year became a board certified specialist in his field with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. “I had no idea it was coming.”

Chief Justice Reiber talks civics at Mt. Abe

BRISTOL — Paul Reiber, chief justice of the Vermont Supreme Court, on Friday at Mount Abraham Union High School kicked off a series of talks he’ll deliver around the state, the goal of which is to further educate students about their country’s judiciary system.

Dubbed “Beyond Labels,” Reiber hopes to emphasize in the discussions the importance of escaping what he calls our society’s “tendency to try and boil down problems into easy and articulable phrases,” that can lead to over-simplified judgments. It’s a problem that he believes is rampant in today’s culture.
