Cyclists gearing up for 'Fondo' rides

HANCOCK — With Memorial Day marking the unofficial start of summertime riding, local bicyclists already have their eyes set on some of the most challenging outings in their neighborhood. Crisscrossing the spine of the Green Mountains, a ride through the Lincoln, Brandon, Appalachian and Middlebury gaps makes for a fearsome quartet of climbs and descents with thousands of vertical feet gained and lost as one passes from the Champlain Valley to the Mad River Valley and back again.

Hobbies keep you young

As the prospect for retirement nears, whether you’re 63 or 80, hobbies and pastimes become more and more priceless in terms of personal enjoyment and fulfillment. The challenge is to pursue ones that last a lifetime.

Power weight-lifting is out after age 70 or so for most, but bird-watching is definitely in and, like gardening, can have moments of adventure, excitement and physical activity, not to mention years of satisfaction.

Are you protected: Guard yourself against scams and identity theft

Two years ago, I received a letter addressed to me and a mystery man, Thomas Miller, from the Ohio Department of Taxes asking for further financial documents before issuing me a tax refund.

Then, Thomas Miller and I received a letter from Michigan with the same request. A couple days later, Hawaii sent Thomas Miller and me a check for more than $5,000 to my address in Cornwall.

Group encourages girls to take up lifelong sports

MIDDLEBURY — Abby Weissman admits she wasn’t an extraordinary athlete while growing up. She didn’t win any athletic scholarships and spent most of her running races in the middle of the pack. But she did have something else going for her, a series of coaches throughout high school and college that taught her to love athletic pursuits. Thanks to the coaches she had, Weissman is still participating in sports like running and cross-country skiing.

Arts Beat for June 8: Student concert slated for Town Hall Theater Sunday

On Sunday at 2 p.m., faculty members, students of all ages, and special guests will take to the stage at the Town Hall Theater to perform together with a spirit of collaboration that has been driving the Middlebury Community Music Center in its first year. Vermont cows give 2 billion pounds of milk

CONCORD, N.H. — New England dairy farmers brought in more money for the milk they sold in 2014, according to a report released by the USDA this month. Vermont farmers’ cash receipts grew slightly faster than the regional average.

ADDISON COUNTY/BRANDON — The Spring Open Studio Tour over Memorial Day Weekend offers a great way for locals and visitors alike to see the Green Mountain State as well as the work of Vermont artist right where it is made. Bright yellow signs are placed along Vermont’s roads to mark the way to studios of craftspeople and fine artists during the self-guided tour on May 23 and 25 at a time when the landscape is fresh and inviting and without the crowds of summer and fall.

Legislators mark some milestones: education, budget, other bills wrap up

MONTPELIER — Lawmakers expected to take on a lot of important issues when they arrived in Montpelier for the legislative session in January. Education finance reform, economic development, energy, water quality, child protection and health care reform were all on the docket.

Over it all hung a fiscal year 2016 budget that showed signs of a big deficit before the end of the month.

As the Legislature adjourned on Saturday, state senators, representatives and the governor all could count some accomplishment in the session.
