Bristol village bridge closes for repairs

BRISTOL — The bridge across the New Haven River at South Street in the Bristol village closed for repairs Tuesday and will not open again until 2012 at the earliest, according to Bristol Town Administrator Bill Bryant.

The Vermont Agency of Transportation, known as VTrans, inspected the bridge last week as a follow up to an inspection last October.

Report suggests $1.6M fix for flooding on Route 125

RIPTON — Middlebury and Ripton officials support further study of a $1.6-million plan to install a series of flood walls and culverts along Route 125 from Ripton to East Middlebury as a way of minimizing washouts and other damage from future flooding.

New business fills a niche in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — When Pierre Vachon set out to get a pair of tragedy/comedy masks tattooed on his upper arm last year, he had no idea that the venture would lead him to become a business proprietor in downtown Middlebury.

During the long hours in the tattoo chair, he got to know tattoo artist Christin Eaton, who was operating a fully licensed business out of her home.

“As she was tattooing me we were talking, and it just kind of fit,” he said. “We thought, ‘Why don’t we open up a shop together?’”

'Stampede' tops $1M for CF research

BRISTOL — July in Bristol isn’t complete without the 5-kilometer race, country music radio and silent auction of the Three Day Stampede.

Over the past 17 years, the Stampede, which is an annual weekend fund-raiser for cystic fibrosis research, has raised over $1 million.

Hiroshima survivor shares story

MIDDLEBURY — On the morning of Aug. 6, 1945, 13-year-old Shigeko Sasamori was within two miles of the epicenter of the atomic bomb’s blast in Hiroshima. She, along with her schoolmates and many other schoolchildren in the Japanese city, was clearing away the rubble of buildings demolished to create escape paths in case of firebombing in the city.

Major power upgrade diverts creek in city

VERGENNES — The loudest phase of Green Mountain Power Corp’s major project to rebuild parts of its Vergennes dam was set to start Monday morning, when demolition experts will begin what is expected to be about two weeks of a half-dozen blasts a day to clear out bedrock to allow replacement of what company officials call decaying piping.

Traffic on West Main Street will be stopped when blasting occurs, and motorists can expect delays.

Pollution in Lake Champlain, Part 3: Treading water: slow clean up continues

ADDISON COUNTY — Warm weather earlier this month sparked blue-green algae blooms in Lake Champlain’s waters, prompting the Vermont Department of Health to caution boaters, swimmers, pet-owners and other residents to avoid contact with the contaminated water.

The water may not be clear, but this much is: Pollution in the form of phosphorus entering the lake poses a serious threat to Lake Champlain’s waters.
