College gets high rank from NCSA

By Tamara Hilmes

MIDDLEBURY — Just like any compliment, some college rankings need to be taken with a grain of salt.

That is the attitude of Middlebury College Director of Athletics Erin Quinn, anyway, in deference to the National Collegiate Scouting Association’s (NCSA) recent ranking of Middlebury as third overall in their “comprehensive study of both academics and athletics.”

Pool ends season in the black

VERGENNES — Vergennes officials’ first summer of overseeing the city’s Sam Fishman Pool went well, City Manager Mel Hawley told aldermen at their meeting last Tuesday night, and it ended with a surplus of roughly $10,000.

The city accepted ownership of the pool this spring from the Vergennes ID school board, which ceased operations earlier this year per a 2009 vote of city residents. That board owned the land under the pool and the city’s other nearby recreation facilities, as well as an adjacent 8-acre parcel of land accessed from New Haven Road by a right-of-way.

By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — City aldermen on Sept. 21 approved a proposal by City Manager Mel Hawley, also the city’s zoning administrator, to raise the city’s zoning fees for the first time since January 2001. Hawley said the Vergennes Development Review Board had worked with him on coming up with the new fee schedule.

Food shelves see record demand

Posted on September 23, 2010 |
By John Flowers

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County human services providers are using superlatives these days in describing the state of food and fuel assistance resources available for needy families.

Only in this case, the superlatives are being used in a negative sense.

“I have been here 10 years, and it has never been nearly this bad,” Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) Executive Director Jeanne Montross said on Monday in describing the emptiness of her agency’s emergency food shelf.

MIDDLEBURY — It was 38 years ago that contractor Dutton Smith Sr., unable to secure a permit from the town of Middlebury for a development proposal, wrote a farcical play summing up his frustrations.

He aptly titled it “The Permit,” and it played to 21 enthusiastic crowds before the script was shelved.

UD-3 board revises cutting strategy for 2011-12 budget

Posted on September 23, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — UD-3 school officials will explore the consequences of building a 2011-2012 spending plan that is 2 percent less than the current year’s budget.

It’s a sobering assignment, but somewhat less formidable than the task that had been mapped out for the UD-3 budget committee last spring. The panel and UD-3 administrators had been directed to develop a 2011-2012 budget reflecting a 3.5-percent decrease compared to current spending for Middlebury Union Middle School and High School. That would’ve translated into a $558,852 cut.

Water board says no once again to revote

Posted on September 23, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The Vergennes-Panton Water District Board again on Tuesday declined to accept Vergennes resident and Alderman Randy Ouellette’s petition calling for a second vote on the board’s $5.1 million plan for a major upgrade to its lakefront water plant.

On Aug. 4, Vergennes and Panton residents voted, 104-49, in 8 percent turnout, to approve a bond in that amount to fund what would be essentially a complete overhaul of the district’s 37-year-old plant on Lake Champlain, the first major project since its construction.
