Top court backs Rt. 7 store in Ferrisburgh

FERRISBURGH — The Vermont Supreme Court on Feb. 14, 2014, upheld a 2012 Environmental Court ruling favoring a Dollar General store proposed for the Ferrisburgh intersection of Route 7 and Monkton Road.

The Ferrisburgh Zoning Board of Adjustment in February 2011 first granted landowners Group Five LLC a permit for the discount retail store. It is proposed for a 9.9-acre field that lies across Monkton Road from Denecker Chevrolet and across Route 7 from a solar farm.

UD-3 voters to consider recreation facility lease Feb. 25

MIDDLEBURY — Middle­bury’s plan to build a new recreation facility off Creek Road will face its first major hurdle at the annual UD-3 meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 25, when district voters will be asked to authorize the negotiation of a lease for the land on which the 11,500-square-foot facility would be built.

Monkton residents decry Vermont Gas tactics after company threatens to use eminent domain

MONKTON — Vermont Gas Systems has said it will use eminent domain to obtain Monkton land it needs to build its pipeline through Addison County if town landowners do not agree to let the company cross their land.

At least some Monkton residents said they consider that tactic to be threatening.

George seeks encore on Middlebury board to cap 2014 agenda

MIDDLEBURY — With almost 18 years logged with Middlebury’s top elected board and his latest term set to expire this March, Middlebury selectboard Chairman Dean George had seriously considered riding into the sunset. But he decided to place his name on the ballot again this year in an effort to take care of what he believes is some unfinished business.

Sick leave bill advances in legislature

BRISTOL — A bill that would require many Vermont businesses to allow their employees to accrue paid sick time is advancing in the House, where the measure has unleashed a great deal of debate about the potential impact on businesses.

That bill, H.208, was one of several topics discussed at Monday’s legislative breakfast in Bristol.

ID-4 budget calls for new teaching post

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters this April will be asked to support a Mary Hogan Elementary School budget of $6,647,165 for the 2014-15 academic year, a spending plan that reflects a 3.56-percent increase.

That spending hike is primarily being driven by increases in employee salaries and health care benefits and by a proposal to establish a fourth first-grade class at the growing school.

Two Perlees face each other in Bristol selectboard race

BRISTOL — Two in-laws with the same surname will face off for the same open three-year seat on the Bristol selectboard: Kris Perlee and Michelle Perlee.

Michelle Perlee is the wife of Kris Perlee’s cousin, Chad Perlee. Both Perlees are seeking the seat being vacated by incumbent selectboard member Alan Huizenga, who decided not to run for election.

VUES to introduce read-a-thon

VERGENNES — Thanks to a link between the two schools, Vergennes Union Elementary School this winter is borrowing an educational fundraising tactic from Middlebury’s Mary Hogan School.

On Feb. 28, an all-school assembly at VUES will kick off that school’s “Read-a-Thon,” in which pupils can earn money for a future bonus program at VUES by reading books outside of the classroom and being paid to do so by sponsors, possibly at the suggested rate of a penny a minute.
