City manager says Vergennes budget is in good shape

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council on April 22 heard good budget news from City Manager Mel Hawley on two fronts, annual spending and the city’s new police station.

Hawley said despite what he called a rough winter, Vergennes Public Works Department spending is under budget — even its $50,000 line item for sand and salt, which has $9,000 remaining.

“I think we’re in good shape,” he said. “That’s not the sort of story you hear from other municipalities.”

Conservation project preserves land north of Bristol from development

BRISTOL — The Vermont Land Trust and The Nature Conservancy this week announced they have completed the first phase of the Bristol Gateway Conservation Project. The two organizations had been working with the community on the project for many years and recently completed a successful local fundraising campaign. Now the 346-acre Farr property — comprising farmland, forest, and a natural area — is protected from future development.

The second phase of the project, the conservation of the adjacent Fuller farm, will be completed in early summer.

Three VUHS juniors selected for Girls' State

VERGENNES — The Vergennes American Legion Auxiliary has selected three junior girls from Vergennes Union High School to attend Green Mountain Girls’ State this year. The Auxiliary will sponsor Arianna Duprey, Hannah Hatch and Tia Hunt as they spend the week of June 15 at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vermont.

American Legion choses VUHS delegates to Boys' State

VERGENNES — The Vergennes American Legion Post 14 will be sponsoring four Vergennes Union High School delegates to Green Mountain Boys’ State, held June 15-20 on the campus of Lyndon State College in Lyndonville.

Dana Ambrose, Erik Eisenhower, Liam Hayes and Lucas Paquin were nominated by faculty and staff based on leadership, character and honesty, cooperativeness, community participation and service, and scholarship.

Panton fills town positions, records land sales

PANTON — In recent meetings the Panton selectboard made a number of appointments and began considering how to fill two key openings.

On April 8, the board began dealing with the vacant Panton seat on the Vergennes Union High School board, a position most recently held by Karrie Beebe, and a vacancy on the joint planning commission/development review board, a position most recently filled by Ben Chamberlain.

Basin Harbor Club to host annual Bixby Gala

FERRISBURGH — The annual Bixby Gala hosted by the Basin Harbor Club in Ferrisburgh is scheduled for Friday, May 16, this year. Gala co-chairs Julie Adams and Shanon Atkins, along with Bixby board members and Basin Harbor staff, are once again planning a festive event packed with value and fun. Tickets include hors d’oeuvres and time to schmooze, a four-course sit-down dinner with dinner music, live and silent auctions, a raffle for Red Sox tickets and, for those who choose to get out on the dance floor, dancing to the inimitable sounds of The Grift.

Middlebury sets meeting to discuss pipeline plan

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard this past Tuesday set an agenda for an April 29 public information meeting the town of Middlebury will be hosting about the Phase II Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project.

That meeting will focus on the proposed construction of a natural gas pipeline from Middlebury through Cornwall and Shoreham and under Lake Champlain to the International Paper Co. in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

Vergennes schools net $767,000 grant for afterschool, summer programs

VERGENNES — Although hurdles must still be cleared, the Vermont Department of Education has jointly awarded Vergennes Union elementary and high schools a five-year, $767,426 grant to establish an afterschool program at VUES, preserve and enhance the VUHS afterschool and summer school programs, and enhance the VUES summer school program.
