Morgan museum to move out of Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The National Museum of the Morgan Horse (NMMH) will be trotting north to the American Morgan Horse Association’s Shelburne headquarters after a five-year stay in rented space at 34 Main St. in Middlebury.

The museum’s impending departure was confirmed early this week through a brief press release issued by the NMMH.

Swift resigns from Brandon selectboard

BRANDON — Brandon Selectman Ethan Swift has tendered his resignation, effective following the Sept. 12 meeting.

Swift announced his decision at the Aug. 22 selectboard meeting.

“I felt like it was time,” he said in an interview the next day. “It’s almost exactly six years since I was appointed, and near the five-year anniversary of Irene. It occurred to me that this was a good time to step down and give someone else a chance to serve.”

Ferrisburgh News: Lots going on in county's third-largest town

FERRISBURGH — Our schools are open for the fall and there are great preparations going on to ensure a successful 2016-2017 school year! Ferrisburgh Central School opened for the year on Aug. 31 and already the building is bustling with academic, sports and extra curricular activities as led by the new principal, Dr. Beth Brodie. Students are fundraising for a variety of events and travels (such as the annual sixth grade Canada trip!) so as they appear at your door with wares to sell, please support them as you are able.

Naloxone being sold without prescription

BURLINGTONIn the face of a recent spate of heroin overdoses and growing fears that, in addition to fentanyl-laced heroin, a more dangerous version of the drug called carfentanil is poised to move into the state, Gov. Peter Shumlin and Health Commissioner Harry Chen, MD, announced reently that the Department of Health has issued a standing order for the opioid overdose rescue drug naloxone (brand name Narcan) for all of Vermont.

Middlebury seeking a police dog

Pipeline foes trying a new venue for appeal

BRISTOL — Bristol attorney Jim Dumont believes his latest salvo against Vermont Gas Systems’ Addison Natural Gas Project has the potential to stop the pipeline in its tracks.

Dumont asserts that the 41-mile natural gas pipeline being built from Colchester to Middlebury and Vergennes is a distribution project and hence belongs under the Act 250 land development umbrella; not a transmission project, which would rightfully be overseen by the Public Service Board.

MIDDLEBURY — Yom Kippur — the holiest day on the Jewish calendar — is about atonement, “a day to seek God’s forgiveness for our transgressions,” says Dr. Jack Mayer, a beloved local pediatrician and budding author.

So it seems only fitting that Mayer should become so inspired by a Yom Kippur sermon back in 1992 that he would spend the next 24 years faithfully penning a compelling story of redemption, centering on a villain in one of the darkest periods in human history: The birth of the Third Reich in Germany.

Art park gaining a sculpture from a noted Vermont artist

SHOREHAM — On the south side of Shoreham’s Lemon Fair Sculpture Park, between two life-size statues of horses and a giant silver circle, sculptor Peter Lundberg is working on his latest project, a concrete piece that will tower 30 feet into the air.

The artist, known internationally for sculpting giant, concrete arcs, is setting a mold for a sculpture that will be unearthed and erected at the same site — the park is on the south side of Route 74, just past the Cornwall town line — where he is now creating it.

Big bike race to host stages in Addison County this weekend

ADDISON COUNTY — The Green Mountain Stage Race (GMSR) this weekend will feature two days of racing in Addison County.

The GMSR is a 4-day road bicycle stage race now in its 16th year. With more than 700 competitors expected, the race starts on Friday, Sept. 2, with a stage in Warren.

Stage 2 on Saturday, Sept. 3, will be run entirely in Addison County on a loop in Weybridge, New Haven and Waltham.

Program will restore suspended driver's license for some Vermonters

VERMONT Gov. Peter Shumlin announced this week that starting Sept. 1, individuals with outstanding traffic tickets that have led to license suspension may be eligible for a reduced fine through a statewide Driver Restoration Program.
