Citizens in three county town denounce gas pipeline proposal

MONKTON — Residents in three Addison County towns this week passed articles condemning the Vermont Gas Systems pipeline that is proposed to run through the county.

Voters in Monkton, Cornwall and Shoreham voiced their disapproval with Vermont Gas, the state’s only gas utility, by overwhelmingly approving the measures at their respective town meetings.

Familiar faces win Vergennes City Council seats

VERGENNES — Former Vergennes mayor and alderman Michael Daniels and incumbent city council members Renny Perry and Lynn Donnelly on Tuesday were the winners in a five-way race for three seats on the Vergennes city council.

Daniels, who served six years as mayor before stepping down in March 2013, earned 345 votes to lead the race. Perry, a former Vergennes city manager and New Hampshire city official, finished next with 295 votes, while Donnelly, who was appointed a year ago, came in third with 277.

Lawmakers eye changes in Vermont school financing system

UD-3 endorses $400,000 for teams rooms addition

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union residents on Tuesday voted 1,698 to 1,343 in favor of a $400,000 bond to build a “team rooms” addition onto a new Middlebury recreation center that is to be erected on a 2.5-acre parcel off Creek Road.

Ferrisburgh elects Warden as town clerk, Smits as treasurer

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents in Town Meeting Day Australian balloting at Ferrisburgh Central School elected a new town clerk and treasurer, one of them a successful write-in candidate.

Write-in candidate Gloria Warden scored a decisive victory in the town clerk race, outpolling David Hawkins, 470-226. Hawkins, an Army National Guard sergeant and United Technology Corp. employee, is the grandson of outgoing clerk Chet Hawkins.

County residents OK most school budgets

ADDISON COUNTY AND BRANDON — Voters on Town Meeting Day gave their approval to four out of the five local high school spending plans.

While residents of the five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns rejected the Vergennes Union High School budget (see story, Page 1A), proposed budgets in the rest of Addison County and northern Rutland County met with approval.

Ferrisburgh debates how tax collector is paid

FERRISBURGH — A tie vote at the Ferrisburgh Town Meeting on Tuesday resulted in the death of a selectboard proposal to change the way the town will pay delinquent tax collector Chet Hawkins.

Before a 58-58 paper-ballot vote left Hawkins’ tax collector pay as it has been, debate at the Ferrisburgh Central School gym lasted for about 20 minutes.

Middlebury passes town office plan; Carpenter and Asermily win selectboard seats

MIDDLEBURY —Middlebury residents on Tuesday voted 915-798 in favor of a $6.5 million bond to erect a new municipal building and recreation center. Voters rejected, by a 955-731 tally, a citizens’ petition that sought to direct the selectboard to instead rebuild or renovate the municipal building and gym at their current location at 94 Main St.

Voters also elected Dean George, Brian Carpenter and Laura Asermily to vacancies on the town selectboard. Incumbent Selectman Craig Bingham was defeated in his bid for a fourth consecutive term on the board.
