MIDDLEBURY — Ask veteran Middlebury Union Middle School social studies educator Mary Goodale what got her interested in teaching, and she will give you, without hesitation, a very offbeat answer.

“Swimming,” she said with a grin during an interview last week about her decision to retire this month after more than three decades as a teacher.

New Music on the Point.png

SALISBURY — Contemporary music has always gotten a bad rap. Its discordant, atonal tones have often consigned contemporary music to the fringe. Today, New Music — the term for contemporary classical music composed in the 21st century — is a genre whose popularity and rapid growth are bringing it back from the fringe. Contrary to its perceived difficulty, this is music that you can identify, remember and enjoy.

ANwSU voters support VUHS budget by 169-vote margin

Posted on June 11, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union residents on Tuesday backed the third Vergennes Union High School budget proposal put before them this spring — a $10,258,933 plan — by a margin of 814-645, or about 56-44 percent.

The VUHS board had cut a total $211,000 from the budget that was soundly defeated on Town Meeting Day, and it was $55,000 lower than the plan that lost by 46 votes on May 5. That May 5 vote was complicated by a second, more costly proposal on the same ballot, an addition board members later admitted was a mistake.

MIDDLEBURY — The third time proved to be the charm for the Mount Abraham Union High School budget, as Addison Northeast Supervisory Union voters on Tuesday approved the proposed 2015-2016 spending plan of $13,947,738 by an 852 to 597 tally.

The decisive endorsement by voters allows Mount Abe administrators and school directors to decisively plan for next year and to focus on hiring an interim principal to replace outgoing leader Gaynell Lyman.

MIDDLEBURY — Stationed on the roof of the Middlebury Beef Supply in East Middlebury, a lone bovine figure kept a watchful eye over the parking lot and the passing traffic on Route 7. For more than 50 years, the bull remained at its post — that is, until last week.

With the help of some Middlebury College alumni, “Ferdinand,” as the bull is known, finally completed a trip to the interior of Forest Hall on the college campus, a mission five decades in the making.

BRANDON — Otter Valley Union High School just said “no” to bullying.

A controversial smartphone application used by students to bully others that was taken down in Rutland High School last December appeared at OV last week and met the same fate.

OV Principal Jim Avery said on Saturday that the presence of the After School app was brought to his attention on Monday, June 1, when two students met him that morning and told him about it. By Thursday, the entire school had mobilized against the app, its users and their bullying tactics.

FERRISBURGH — As retiring Ferrisburgh Central School educator Kathy Douglas tells it, she always knew she wanted to teach.

The native of Addison who grew up on her parents’ dairy farm recalled the first of what she said were many jobs centered on children.

“My first job was babysitting at the age of 12 for a teacher that had four boys, and I made 25 cents an hour,” said Douglas, who will wrap up a 42-year career at FCS on Tuesday.

Middlebury selectboard backs airport over objections

Posted on June 11, 2015 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday voted, 5-2, to support a Vermont Agency of Transportation proposal to make $3.5 million in safety upgrades to the Middlebury State Airport. That move is not sitting well with neighbors of the facility, who believe the project could have a negative impact on their quality of life and property values.

“I’ve tried to listen open-mindedly to both sides of the discussion,” Selectman Brian Carpenter said at a board meeting attended by around 20 airport neighbors.
