College student collects community supper stories

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College’s entrepreneurial education program MIDDCore, which started out as a one-month winter term course, is rapidly growing. This year the program has expanded to include a four-week immersive summer session at Sierra Nevada College on Lake Tahoe in Nevada.

Saturday's Peasant Market to feature hooked rug raffle

MIDDLEBURY — Ever since the 1830s, members of the Middlebury community have welcomed high summer by visiting the Peasant Market, a festive occasion on the town green next to St. Stephen’s Church. Peasant Market Day will be held this year on Saturday, July 6, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. It’s not only the largest yard sale in these parts, it’s also a gala occasion featuring food, crafts, live music, activities for children, plants, an auction, books, a raffle and an outdoor lunch created by the St. Stephens expert barbecue team.

Middlebury College bells will sing this summer

MIDDLEBURY — The beautiful sounds of ringing bells will fill the air again this summer, as the 28th annual Middlebury College Carillon Series treats audiences to free performances on Friday evenings at 5 p.m. in and around Mead Memorial Chapel. Each year, musicians from around the world come to Middlebury to perform in the chapel’s soaring tower high above the college campus. All of the concerts are free and open to the public, and can be enjoyed inside Mead Chapel or on the surrounding lawns.

Mt. Independence to host Revolutionary War re-enactment

ORWELL — The Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell hosts a program on Friday, July 5, 2013, to commemorate the major Revolutionary War decision of the Americans to withdraw from Mount Independence in the face of British Lt. Gen. John Burgoyne and his fleet on the night of July 5 and 6, 1777. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mosquito spraying and fish kill are likely unrelated, state says

LEICESTER — A fish die-off in Fern Lake earlier this month has gotten some publicity thanks to one resident’s theory that mosquito pesticide is to blame, but there is no proof of that, yet.

State and local agriculture, fish and wildlife, and mosquito control officials believe the June 4 die-off of several different species of fish in Fern Lake was caused by unusually warm spring weather.

Farm Bill defeat creates problems for farmers

ST. ALBANS — Late last week the U.S. House of Representatives rejected the U.S. Farm Bill, 234-195, thereby setting up the potential for devastating effects on the dairy industry and local farmers.

The rejection came after last-minute amendments made further changes to nutrition programs for the poor and removed the dairy price stabilization programs from the bill.

Vermont tourism stories sought

MIDDLEBURY — Throughout the year, seasonal tourists flock to Vermont to camp in the Green Mountains, peep at the foliage or hit the slopes. Tourism is a significant industry in the state, with visitors spending $1.7 billion annually and supporting 12 percent of all Vermont jobs, according to the most recent report by the Vermont Tourism Data Center at UVM Extension.

State seeks $2M to clean up New Haven gas station

NEW HAVEN — The Vermont Attorney General’s office reported last week that the state has received $2 million for cleanup of a contaminated gas station located in New Haven. The recovery resulted from a lawsuit brought by Attorney Gen. William Sorrell to recover payments that were made from the Vermont Petroleum Cleanup Fund (PCF) at the site and the future costs of cleanup from spills at the New Haven Mobil more than a decade ago.
