Less heating fuel assistance available this winter

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County’s low-income households will have a tougher time keeping their homes warm this winter in light of new eligibility standards and tighter resources for federal fuel assistance, according to state and local human services advocates.

Richard Moffi, fuel program chief for the state of Vermont, said current signs point to the Green Mountain State receiving around $17 million through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). That is approximately 5 percent less than the state received last winter.

Bristol board agrees to fund new firefighter gear

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard on Dec. 18 approved funding for the Bristol Fire Department to purchase six new vehicle extrication coveralls.

Brett LaRose, the first assistant chief of the outfit, said that the fire department had previously purchased 30 suits, but some have been removed from service due to wear and tear.

LaRose said that he spoke with several vendors, and the best quote he received for the coveralls was $2,772. The selectboard approved an appropriation in that amount.

Addison weighs zoning updates vs. new town plan

ADDISON — Members of the Addison planning commission and selectboard reached at least a tentative consensus last week that planners should turn their attention away from updating zoning regulations and toward updating the town plan before it expires late next summer.

Planning commission chairman Frank Galgano said and selectboard chairman Jeff Kauffman confirmed that the members of the two boards at a Dec. 16 planning meeting also agreed that the Addison Development Review Board should in the meantime rely on the town’s 2007 zoning laws.

Middlebury board to field conflict of interest complaint

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard is tentatively scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, to discuss a conflict of interest complaint brought against Selectman Victor Nuovo in connection with his recent votes on a proposal to build a new municipal building and recreation center.

Where to get help with heating your home

Here are the main fuel assistance programs available for Vermonters:

Crisis Fuel Assistance

This is for folks in danger of running out of fuel for home heating, or who may have received a disconnect notice from the utility company. This program provides help to homeowners or renters who pay for their heat or who have heat included in their rent. The program can also help eligible people repair or replace their furnace. A family of four may earn up to $3,926 per month to qualify.

Bristol playground fundraiser exceeds its goal

BRISTOL — A group raising funds for a new playground on the Bristol town green has reached its goal of $11,000.

The Bristol Green Playground Committee used the fundraising website Indiegogo to solicit funds. As of press time, the group had reached raised $12,390. The fundraising period ends Friday.

“This is fantastic,” committee member Darla Senecal said. “To be able to come up with this in such a short time, it’s bolstering.”

As of Tuesday, 134 different people donated to the project.

ADDISON COUNTY — The Vermont Public Service Board on Monday gave its conditional approval to, and issued a Certificate of Public Good for, Vermont Gas Systems’ proposed 41-mile natural gas pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury and Vergennes.

Mt. Abe building repairs sought

BRISTOL — The chair of the Mount Abraham Facility Advisory Committee on Dec. 18 enumerated for the Bristol selectboard some of the reasons the Mount Abraham Union High School facilities should be updated.

Troy Paradee stressed that the building is by no means unsafe — rather, some school officials and residents believe it does not meet the educational needs of students in this day and age.

Vergennes to recieve planning help

VERGENNES — Vergennes City Council members and planning commission chairman Shannon Haggett at this past Tuesday’s council meeting discussed the city’s recent award by Vermont Council on Rural Development of free facilitation for a four-month public-forum process that will be offered either next spring or fall. City Manager Mel Hawley said Vergennes was one of two Vermont towns to earn the honor for 2013.
