Bristol farm to host fun festival

BRISTOL — All are welcome to New Leaf Organic farm in Bristol this Saturday and Sunday for a weekend full of Klezmer music, puppet shows, storytelling, spirituality, mindfulness and art workshops, adventure play, homesteading skills and earth-based art installations. This festival uniquely showcases the abundance, culture and skills of the farm-to-table culture of the New England homestead and offers people of all faiths and backgrounds to experience the seasonal depth of the cyclical Jewish calendar.

Middlebury Methodist church has busy October planned

MIDDLEBURY — The second half of October will be an exciting and busy time at the United Methodist Church of Middlebury, located at the corner of Route 7 and Seminary Street.

On Sunday, Oct. 16, the popular chicken and biscuit dinner will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. In addition to the main entree, many homemade side dishes will be available as well as delicious desserts. The cost is $8. Please note this is in place of the usual last Sunday supper.

State seeks public feedback on railroad plans

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Transportation Board will host seven public forums — including on in Vergennes — for the purpose of gathering public comment about state transportation policy associated with trains, both passenger and freight.

The only Addison County stop will be in Vergennes on Monday, Oct. 17, at Bixby Library, 258 Main St., 6:30 p.m.

Farms receive water clean-up grants; more money is available

ADDISON — Over the past year, as Vermont farmers and industry supporters have been preparing to meet the state’s new water quality regulations, the Vermont Farm & Forest Viability Program, a program of the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board, awarded a total of $65,000 in Dairy Improvement Grants to five dairy farmers for water quality improvement projects.

Springer joins Middlebury firm

BRISTOL/MIDDLEBURY — Avi J. Springer has joined the law firm of Langrock Sperry & Wool LLP as an associate, working primarily in the areas of criminal defense, family law, and other litigation.

Prior to joining the firm, Springer, who lives in Bristol with his wife, worked as a public defender in New York City. In New York he represented clients in the appeals of their felony convictions and other post-conviction matters. He then worked as a trial attorney representing parents in child welfare proceedings in family court.

Wright promoted at Bread Loaf Corp.

MIDDLEBURY — Bread Loaf Corporation, a Vermont firm ofarchitects, planners and builders, recently announced that Justin Wright has been promoted from foreman to superintendent.

Wright began working at Bread Loaf Corporation as a tradesperson in 2005. He has worked on a variety of projects, most recently atHyperthermin Hanover, N.H.; the Brooks House in Brattleboro; and Preston’s Bar & Restaurant at the Killington Grand Resort Hotel. 

He is currently working at the Shelburne Community School renovation project in Shelburne.

DuBois & King hires Sampsell as public works engineer

BRANDON — DuBois & King consulting engineers announce that Andrew Sampsell has joined the firm as staff engineer in the firm’s Public Works Division, which provides engineering services for municipal infrastructure. A recent graduate of the University of Vermont with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Sampsell lives in Rochester and works out of the firm’s Brandon Office.

Porter Medical Center plans affiliation with UVM Health Network

MIDDLEBURY — The Porter Medical Center Board of Directors and the University of Vermont Health Network Board of Trustees have voted unanimously to sign a non-binding “letter of intent” to formally negotiate terms under which PMC would join the University of Vermont Health Network (UVMHN) as an affiliate.

The Oct. 5 action by both boards follows an in-depth exploration by the PMC community on the pros and cons of affiliation with UVMHN.

Vergennes church seeks power from above ... solar power

VERGENNES — St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes will soon be getting a direct connection to the heavens — through 87 solar panels that Bristol Electronics will start installing on the south-facing roof of St. Peter’s Parish Hall this month.

After The Rev. Yvon Royer, who serves both St. Peter’s and the St. Ambrose Parish in Bristol, learned that Rutland’s St. Peter’s Parish earlier this year had such an array installed, in early August he proposed the idea for the rooftop array to the Vergennes Parish.

Students take a bow for their marvelous masks

MIDDLEBURY — More than a half-dozen Mary Hogan Elementary School sixth-graders will magically transform into a variety of colorful, whimsical creatures as part of the Opera Company of Middlebury’s staging of the much-celebrated “The Magic Flute” at the Town Hall Theater this Thursday through Saturday.

It will indeed be a string of creative “firsts” for the children. The Magic Flute will mark their debuts in an opera. And it will be the first time they will have designed their own attire for an on-stage performance.
