Career Center chief Lynn Coale to step down in June

MIDDLEBURY — Lynn Coale harkened back to late 2001, when he applied — almost as a lark — to become director of the Patricia Hannaford Career Center (PHCC). He was finishing his Ph.D. studies and checking out career opportunities in school administration.

But neither Coale nor his family truly thought they would consider leaving their native Wyoming, where they had accumulated great friends and business contacts.

Police say covered bridge burning not 'malicious'; temporary span planned

SALISBURY — Area residents have been uttering some choice adjectives to sum up their emotions about the blaze this past Saturday that destroyed the historic covered bridge spanning the Otter Creek between Salisbury and Cornwall.

Senseless.

Tragic.

Deplorable.

And “sickening,” as voiced by Irene Barna, secretary of the Vermont Covered Bridges Society.

State police arrest 12 pipeline opponents

NEW HAVEN — Vermont State Police on Tuesday cited 12 people — including a member of the local clergy and a Middlebury town official — with unlawful trespass after they stood in the way of construction on a New Haven segment of the Addison County natural gas pipeline.

Organizers of the natural gas pipeline blockade said they took the action to show solidarity with efforts by Native Americans and allies in North and South Dakota who are trying to block construction of an oil pipeline there.

Monkton man lets the harmonica speak

Typically in an interview, the reporter asks a question and the subject answers (as best they can anyway). Well, thats not how it happened last week when I interviewed Mark Lavoie on the phone. I (the reporter) asked the questions and Lavoie (the subject) answered through his harmonica. No joke, he played several different riffs and diddies in place of sentences and explanations. 

Cool, yes. But how am I going to put these sounds into words?

Brandon McDonald's to close; new eateries set

BRANDON — The McDonald’s fast food restaurant in Brandon will close at the end of the month, and two new eateries are expected to move into the space.

Champlain Oil owns the building on Route 7 North, also known as 228 Grove St., which houses the Jiffy Mart convenience store and gas station. An application has been submitted to the town of Brandon for a conditional use review by the Development Review Board, and is on the agenda for a Sept. 28 hearing.

Deep in the Vermont forest, artist Alissa Faber trudges through the terrain dragging a piece of decaying wood behind her. This log, once dead on the forest floor, might be overlooked by any other, but in Faber’s eyes this is an opportunity to create.

College opens new townhouse-style student housing

MIDDLEBURY — Less than one year after Middlebury College began clearing the site for a 158-bed residence complex, its first student occupants have moved into the four new buildings on the western edge of campus.

Orientation leaders, residential life staff and student-athletes started arriving two weeks ago at the 58,800-square-foot Ridgeline Residence Complex.

MIDDLEBURY — The fall semester at Middlebury College opened on Monday, Sept. 12, with 607 new first-year students on campus and a total enrollment, including undergraduates studying abroad, of 2,747 students.

Ferrisburgh bans cycling event following complaints

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard decided at its Sept. 6 meeting it will not again allow the Vermont Senior Games to run bicycle races on town roads.

The organization’s four hours of mid-day races Aug. 27 on Little Chicago, Botsford and Hawkins roads generated one formal complaint from a resident as well as phone calls to board members, according to Selectboard Chairwoman Loretta Lawrence.
