Shumlin unconvinced on school funding changes, upbeat on single-payer health care

MIDDLEBURY — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Monday warned about the potential legal consequences of overhauling the state’s education finance system and expressed his priorities for a single-payer health care system that could be in place as soon as 2017.

Shumlin made his comments during an interview at the Addison Independent. The governor also appeared on Monday at a legislative luncheon at the Middlebury Legion (see related story on Page 1A) at which he was challenged on his support for the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project.

MUHS to host Sen. Sanders' video town hall

MIDDLEBURY — U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders will host a first of its kind tele-town hall meeting Sunday, which will include a film screening followed by a question-and-answer session about income inequality in the United States.

“In my view, the issue of income and wealth inequality is the great moral, economic and political issue of our time,” Vermont’s junior senator said in an interview Monday.

Hospital chief Jim Daily sets retirement date

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center Chief Executive Officer James L. Daily has confirmed he will retire from his position by early 2016, after what will have been 32 years at the helm of the county’s top health care organization that he has helped transform. Daily, 59, confirmed his planned departure through a recent letter to Porter employees.

He has pledged to participate actively in the leadership transition.

The Addison Independent next week will run a longer article on Daily’s time at the medical center.

Bristol playground effort seeks $25,000

BRISTOL — Organizers of the Bristol Green Playground Project say they need to raise an additional $25,000 to fully fund construction of a new playground on the town green.

The group, called the Bristol Green Playground Committee, hopes to raise the funds by the end of April.

Shumlin addresses other issues at luncheon

MIDDLEBURY — Most of the dozen or so questions Gov. Peter Shumlin fielded at the Legislative Lunch at Middlebury’s American Legion hall on Monday dealt with the proposed natural gas pipeline that would bisect the county.

But in his limited time in Middlebury the governor also briefly touched upon:

•His hope to have all New England states raise their minimum wage rates to $10.10 per hour by 2017.

Opera company to offer free tickets to teens

MIDDLEBURY — The Opera Company of Middlebury (OCM) is offering free tickets to middle and high school students for the Saturday, April 5, broadcast of “La Bohème” at the Town Hall Theater. This “Met in HD” performance will be broadcast live from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. The broadcast starts at1 p.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m.

On March 27, the central Champlain Valley’s school community will come together for a day of inspiration, celebration and networking at the fifth annual Stone Soup Summit. Students, teachers, parents, administrators, farmers, food service managers, nurses and community volunteers will share stories of challenge and triumph and work in diverse groups to address the issues facing farm-to-school programs and school nutrition in our region.

Ferrisburgh school board to eye lower budget in April

FERRISBURGH — After discussion on March 18, the Ferrisburgh Central School board decided to ask Principal JoAnn Taft-Blakely and Addison Northwest Supervisory Union officials to come back at its April 10 meeting with a lower budget proposal to put before town voters.

That decision was made at the first FCS board meeting since its $3.62 million FCS budget proposal lost on March 4, 450-279, or about 62-38 percent. That defeat of an FCS spending plan is believed to be the first in the school’s history.

County towns could get help feeding kids this summer
