MIDDLEBURY — Despite having produced nearly 70 years worth of work, Brandon artist Warren Kimble’s favorite piece of art has never been seen by the general public. That’s because he hasn’t made it yet.

In Kimble’s words, his favorite artwork is “the next one. Because when what you’ve done is finished, it’s done. So the excitement for me, as an artist, is the next thing. The excitement of the next thing. I’m already thinking about it.”

Youthful entrepreneurs get on the bus to their future

ADDISON COUNTY — For unsuspecting children, a school bus turned blue overnight recently.

Here, in the parking lot of the Bingham Memorial School in Cornwall, Middlebury College junior Lena Jacobs has transformed a typical, yellow school bus into a mobile classroom that will soon depart Vermont for a summer-long trip across the United States.

In its new capacity, the bus will continue to transport youngsters, only now it will take them on the first leg of a trip toward achieving their dreams.

Porter's new 3-D mammography machine brings breast cancer into focus

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Hospital has acquired a new, state-of-the-art mammography machine that uses 3-D technology in producing images so reliable that it gives staff radiologists a 41-percent better chance in detecting invasive breast cancer compared to the previous, two-dimensional mammography test.

Affordable housing eyed for Waltham

WALTHAM — Despite some citizen questions at a May 13 Waltham Development Review Board hearing, Waltham and Addison County Community Trust (ACCT) officials say a proposed 14-unit affordable housing development on the Waltham-Vergennes border remains on track.

The DRB has set a second hearing for 6:30 p.m. on June 23 on the ACCT’s roughly $3 million proposal for seven modular duplexes on a 2.3-acre parcel served by municipal water and sewer. It will be held in Waltham Town Hall.

Regulator to host technical hearing on gas pipeline plan

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Public Service Board on Monday, June 22, will begin the first of an anticipated two days of technical hearings en route to deciding whether to reopen the permitting process for Phase I of proposed Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project, which calls for a 43-mile natural gas pipeline extension from Colchester to Middlebury and Vergennes.

Regional planning commission re-evaluating stance on pipeline

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Regional Planning Commission is undecided on what the public body’s new position should be on a natural gas pipeline project headed to Middlebury.

The regional planning commission brings delegates from 21 towns around Addison County together to adopt a regional plan, discuss community and economic development, and advise communities on energy and land use policy. It meets monthly and is one of 10 regional planning commissions across Vermont.

Towns seek tax revenues from lake power line

ADDISON COUNTY — As the Vermont Public Service Board considers a permit for a proposed $1.2 billion electricity transmission line through Lake Champlain, local community planners are asking that the regulator not stop Addison County’s lakefront towns from taxing the underwater line.

If the permit does forestall such taxation, it could mean that Addison, Bridport, Shoreham and Orwell would miss out on up to $7 million in tax revenue, according to the Addison County Regional Planning Commission.

Happy Father's Day to my great-grandfather

Editor’s note: With Father’s Day coming up on Sunday, this essay caught our eye because it reminds us of the boundless love children have for their caretakers. Bristol 9-year-old Shelby Stevers, daughter of Stacy and Matt Stevers, was asked by her third-grade teacher at Bristol Elementary School to write about somebody who meant a lot to her, and she chose to write about her great-grandfather, Pete Many of Middlebury.
