Boys and Girls Club lands $33,000 federal grant

VERGENNES — The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes is receiving $33,600 in federal grants to support its activities and programs as part of a statewide $550,000 bequest to the five Vermont Boys and Girls Clubs.  

That statewide bequest, announced last week by Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., is nearly 10 percent more than the previous year.

Hannaford Career Center's tuition rate slated for 14.7 percent increase

MIDDLEBURY — Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center directors are proposing a 2015-2016 spending plan of $3,496,478, reflecting a 2.24-percent increase over this year’s budget.

Despite the relatively small spending increase, the budget would result in a 14.7 percent boost in the tuition rate for enrollees from the three Addison County high schools for which the career center provides technical education programs.

Slight spending hike results in bigger tax boost at OVUHS

BRANDON — Statewide education funding reform can’t come soon enough for Otter Valley Union High School. Despite the fact that the OV board approved a proposed budget this month with a modest 1.83 percent spending increase, the union Homestead tax rate will increase by roughly 7 cents, or 4.6 percent.

The board on Jan. 7 approved a $10,718,131 spending plan for the 2015-2016 fiscal year, a $192,414 increase over the current spending plan.

County's northeast towns look for full election slates

BRISTOL — Local residents have until Monday to file the necessary paperwork to appear on the ballot for town offices or school boards, but ballots in each of the five towns that comprise the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union are already shaping up.

Anyone who wishes to run for a town or school office must submit a nominating petition at their town office by 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26. Signatures from 1 percent of registered voters are required.

Voters will head to the polls on Town Meeting Day, March 3, to choose their representatives.

Tavern goes hydroponic for greens, herbs

Bixby Library to host new computer club

VERGENNES — The exceedingly fresh and new Bixby Library Computer Club in Vergennes will present “Exploring the Magic of Digital Radios” at its inaugural meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 4. The club has invited UTC electrical engineer Scott Fusare to present the history of hardware radios. The presentation will be held in the library’s Community from 3:30-5:30 p.m. A group hacking of Scott’s software-defined radio will follow the presentation.

Legislative breakfasts to begin Feb. 2

ADDISON COUNTY — Bridport Grange No. 303 and the Addison County Farm Bureau have organized a series of breakfasts and lunches at which local lawmakers and residents can discuss what is going on in Montpelier during the legislative session.

The 2015 Legislative Breakfast series will debut on Monday, Feb. 2, and include a March 23 luncheon with Gov. Peter Shumlin.

City playground set for DRB review

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Development Review Board will on Feb. 2 get its first look at a scaled-down version of a preschool playground proposed for a small, city-owned parcel next to the Vergennes city pool.

Vergennes aldermen voted in December to reduce the playground’s footprint on the 0.3-acre East Street lot by about 40 percent after neighbors and some other city residents complained about its location, impact on the area and $42,000 cost in the face of other priorities.

Brandon selectboard chair steps down

BRANDON — The chair of the Brandon selectboard abruptly resigned this on Jan. 12, and her board postponed approval of a preliminary budget to send to voters.

Maria Ammatuna, in a letter read publicly by Brandon selectboard Vice Chair Dave Atherton, cited critical health concerns as the reason for her sudden resignation.

Hoyler fondly recalled as new Ripton clerk sought

RIPTON — The Ripton selectboard next week will decide how the community will fill its town clerk and treasurer positions following the tragic death of Sally Hoyler, who had held those posts for the past decade.

Hoyler, 59, had reported not feeling well last fall and visited a physician’s office just prior to Thanksgiving. That visit and subsequent hospital tests yielded the bad news: Hoyler had an advanced form of cancer. She understandably took leave of her town clerk/treasurer responsibilities but gave as much help as she could from home.
