Turkeys, toys collected for those in need this holiday season

ADDISON COUNTY — Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) and other area groups are launching their annual efforts to make sure all Addison County families are able to enjoy a nice meal on Thanksgiving and ensure that all local children have at least one present to open this holiday season.

Deer rifle season starts strong; numbers and weights are up

ADDISON COUNTY — The 2015 deer rifle season got off to a promising start in Addison County on Nov. 14 and 15, with the numbers coming in at the third-best opening-weekend total since 2010 and hunters taking down many trophy animals.

In all, the county’s nine official weigh stations handled 188 bucks, just 12 fewer than the highest opening weekend total of the past six years, 200 in 2013, and four fewer than 2010’s two-day total of 192.

Gonyeau sentenced to probation in death of bicyclist

MIDDLEBURY — The Ferrisburgh resident who was driving under the influence of alcohol on June 17 when her car struck and killed a Charlotte physician bicycling on Greenbush Road in Ferrisburgh was on Monday sentenced to a year’s probation and 80 days of community service in the Addison County Superior Court.

Judge Samuel Hoar handed down that sentence, to which was also attached a lengthy list of conditions that included drug and alcohol screening and substance abuse treatment, after Holly Gonyeau, 36, changed her plea from innocent to no contest.

Former education secretary to lead Bristol-area schools

BRISTOL — Former Vermont Secretary of Education Armando Vilaseca will soon take the reins as interim superintendent at Addison Northeast Supervisory Union. There are still some details to be worked out with the ANeSU board, but Vilaseca plans to begin his duties the week of Nov. 30 and work through the end of the school year.

Operation Christmas Child accepting boxes for needy kids this week

Locations in Middlebury and Vergennes this week become local drop-off points for the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind, Operation Christmas Child. During National Collection Week, Nov. 16-23, each location will collect shoeboxes packed with toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes of encouragement from generous area donors.

This year, local project coordinators hope to collect 7,450 shoebox gifts to deliver to children in need overseas.

New Howard Frank Mosher novel doffs chapeau to college's Twilight

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont author Howard Frank Mosher draws much of his literary inspiration from the people and places in his native Northeast Kingdom. But he occasionally strays to points north or south for complementary characters, as he did with his latest book, “God’s Kingdom,” which includes a cast member loosely based on Alexander Twilight of Middlebury College fame.

MIDDLEBURY — Rain gardens are designed to be both attractive and functional, to enhance a property and make people happy while they do the dirty work of trapping and filtering stormwater, thus keeping pollutants out of the lake, explained LandWorks landscape architect Patrick Olstad, who designed the 2013 rain garden at the Marble Works.

MIDDLEBURY — “We’re going to cut out a lot of asphalt,” said Patrick Olstad, a landscape architect with LandWorks, in describing his firm’s plan for updating a part of Rutland that should decrease water runoff — and therefore pollution — into Otter Creek.

Judge dismisses suit against Vergennes over toddler park

VERGENNES — Addison Superior Court Judge Samuel Hoar Jr. on Nov. 2 dismissed a civil lawsuit filed against Vergennes by an East Street resident that was related to the city’s failed attempt to build a preschool playground near the city’s East Street swimming pool.

That quarter-acre project, originally estimated at $42,000, was to be funded by a $21,000 grant and by another $21,000 from the city’s Water Tower Fund. City officials walked away from the playground proposal when the cost escalated after a year of delays.
