Local farms go for cover crops

MIDDLEBURY — Champlain Valley Farmer Coalition (CVFC) members planted 6,735 acres of winter cover crops on farmland in Addison, Chittenden and Rutland counties to help protect water quality, improve soil health and increase next year’s crop yields.

That included 5,587 acres on 31 farms in Addison County.

Some good news as ANeSU boards start budget work

BRISTOL — School boards across the state are facing additional challenges as they draft budgets for the 2016-2017 school year.

Health insurance costs through the Vermont Education Health Initiative — used by most school districts — are up 7.9 percent, at the same time as Act 46 is putting a squeeze on per pupil spending.

Longest night celebration set for Monday, Dec. 21

BRISTOL —The year’s long night has fallen and the forests and fields of the world’s far northern climes lay waiting for the sun’s return to warm the land and deliver summer’s bounty. Its journey paints a long story across a waiting sky, and that tale begins on Monday, Dec. 21, at the Watershed Center’s annual winter solstice celebration at the Waterworks property on Plank Road in Bristol. All are invited to join the festivities and welcome back the light from the southern horizon.

Greg's market property slated to be sold at public auction

MIDDLEBURY — The former owner of Greg’s Meat Market at 3 Elm St. in Middlebury has filed for bankruptcy protection and the property is expected to be sold at a public auction early next year.

That news was delivered to the Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday by Jamie Gaucher, the town’s director of business development and innovation. Gaucher also noted that the mortgage on the Greg’s property is being held by TD Bank.

Cattle census to get under way in January

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In January, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will survey more than 40,000 cattle operations nationwide to provide an up-to-date measure of U.S. cattle inventories.

Students to perform piano solos

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School students Ella Nagy-Benson and Jakub Kraus, both piano students of Diana Fanning, have been selected to perform piano solos in the annual St. Paul’s Cathedral Arts’ Young Artists Showcase Recital in January. Young musicians from all over Vermont were invited to audition for the opportunity to perform in the showcase.

Rail bridges plan could span 4 years

MIDDLEBURY — The proposed fix for Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges has now been budgeted for $40 million, with construction affecting portions of the village area during parts of as many as four calendar years.

This latest information comes from Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) and Kubricky Construction officials, who recently presented Middlebury officials with a revised budget and construction timetable based on project designs now deemed 60-percent complete.

Vermont Farm Show is coming to Champlain fairgrounds

ESSEX JUNCTION — More than 150 vendors are getting prepared to set up shop at the Champlain Valley Fairgrounds in January for the next edition of the Vermont Farm Show. For more than 80 years, the Farm Show has been a great place to check out new technology, see old friends and catch up on a variety of association updates through organizational meetings.

This year’s show will again feature Consumer Night on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m., hosted by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets, as well as the very popular Iron Chef Challenge!
