Leicester OKs school budget on second try

By John Flowers

LEICESTER — Leicester residents on Tuesday voted 68 to 61 in favor of a slightly scaled-back version of the 2013-2014 elementary school budget of $1,127,521 that they had defeated on Town Meeting Day.

The new spending plan of $1,117,640 reflected $9,881 in cuts, resulting in a 5.4-percent increase compared to this year. Cuts made by the Leicester Central School board included around $2,140 in health insurance-related expenses, $2,758 less in compensation for the school nurse position, and a $5,000 reduction in administrative salaries.

City to vote May 14 on bond for a new police headquarters

VERGENNES — As expected, Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday warned a May 14 vote for a $1.45 million bond to fund a new 4,611-square-foot police station on North Main Street, one that will cost taxpayers $400,000 less than the proposal that was narrowly defeated on Town Meeting Day.

The plan calls for savings of about $300,000 in construction costs over the initial proposal, mainly due to a building redesign that cuts out a little more than 1,300 square feet, but also due to savings on site development and land costs. The project cost is now roughly $1.55 million.

NEW HAVEN — On a recent morning in a sunlit room on Rivers Bend Road in New Haven, four-year-old Brian Henderson sat on the floor and pondered his next move.
