New Middlebury businesss is all about maple

MIDDLEBURY — Longtime maple syrup producer Rayce Burnham of Cornwall had been looking for a spot in which to consolidate his boiling operation. He had acquired a 2.5-foot-by-8-foot evaporator that needed a bigger home, and he wasn’t financially prepared to build a place of his own.

UD-3 school board, administration begin budget work facing fiscal limits

MIDDLEBURY — UD-3 school district administrators will build a 2016-2017 budget for Middlebury Union high and middle schools under the assumption that they will be limited to a 0.71 percent increase in per-pupil spending, as prescribed by Act 46, the state’s new education consolidation law. Spending over that threshold would subject the district to a dollar penalty for each dollar they spend above their limit, according to the new law.

Addison looks to residents for input on new town plan

ADDISON — The Addison Planning Commission will take its next step toward a rewrite of key provisions of Addison’s town plan on Monday, when planners will host what they hope will be a well-attended open house at Addison Central School from 4 to 7 p.m.

They hope especially to talk about the issue of allowing smaller lots and protecting open land in the town’s largest zoning district, the Low Density Residential and Agricultural (LDR/A) district.

ORWELL — Brad Thomas walks around a field on his Jillian Acres farm off Route 73 West in Orwell, showing some visitors the cover crop he has planted on some of hay fields. Thomas milks cows and farms 465 acres in Orwell and 225 in Rutland County.

Local youths shine at regional dairy contest

ADDISON COUNTY — Several Addison County 4-H’ers placed in dairy competitions and the regional dairy show at Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Mass., recently.

DAIRY COMPETITIONS

In the general dairy knowledge contest, held Sept. 17, Sharon Palmer of Weybridge came in seventh in the senior division. All dairy exhibitors were required to take part in this contest.

Working Lands grants on offer to farmers, foresters

VERMONT — The Working Lands Enterprise Board (WLEB) is making available approximately $550,000 in grants to fund forestry and agriculture projects that enhance Vermont’s communities, economy and culture.

The applicant guide can be found online at http://workinglands.vermont.gov/apply/rfp. Applicant Information Sessions are scheduled for Oct. 9 and 14.

4-H'ers display horse smarts at Big E

Burlington— Vermont 4-H equestrians, including two from Addison County, proved that they could hold their own against top competitors from throughout New England at 4-H horse events held Sept. 23-27 at Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Mass.

The University of Vermont (UVM) Extension 4-H delegation included 12 4-H’ers and four 4-H teen leaders, selected to provide assistance at the horse show. The teen leaders also had an opportunity to compete in their own divisions.

Town of New Haven gets hearings on solar projects

NEW HAVEN — The state’s utility regulators will give the town of  New Haven a voice in their consideration of three separate proposed solar power projects. The town, which boasts open fields and a proximity to a main power transmission line, has been the target for many solar array proposals.

Town officials are glad to get a chance to protect their interests.

First archery season opens

MONTPELIER — Hunters are enthusiastic about Vermont’s ongoing Oct. 3-25 and upcoming Dec. 5-13 archery deer hunting seasons, according to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. 

A hunter may take up to three deer in Vermont’s two-part archery season with three archery licenses. No more than one of the deer taken during archery season may be a legal buck. No antlerless deer may be taken in Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) E1 or E2, where antlerless deer hunting is prohibited in 2015.

Bristol ready to break ground on new firehouse

BRISTOL — Just under a year ago, a grim engineering report on the state of Bristol’s 1897 fire station ignited the town to redouble its efforts to rehouse the town’s firefighters in a safe and efficient modern facility.

Builders are slated to break ground in less than two weeks on a new firehouse on a 9-acre parcel on the south side of West Street near the entrance to the Bristol recreation fields.
