Arts Beat: Renowned performer to offer new dance pieces

The Middlebury College Performing Arts Series will present Assistant Professor of Dance Tzveta Kassabova as she leads an evening of vibrant new dance works in the Dance Theater at the Mahaney Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The works have been created in collaboration with renowned performers Paul Matteson (Five Colleges), Elena Demyanenko (Bennington College), and Jennifer Nugent (Amherst College).

House Speaker Smith, Rep. Jewett weigh future plans

MONTPELIER — Vermont House of Representatives Speaker Shap Smith might re-enter the race for governor, and one decision he has already made could affect the plans of at least one Addison County lawmaker.

Smith, a Morrisville Democrat, acknowledged in a March 30 phone interview with the Independent that he might re-insert himself into the contest for governor, this after having withdrawn from the race this past November.

Recreation center hosting a new racquet sport

MIDDLEBURY — This spring, visitors at the new town recreation center in Middlebury will enjoy their favorite sports in the new facility off Creek Road. In addition to regular classes and pickup games in various familiar athletic endeavors, a new sport will also be available. 

Middlebury, meet pickleball.

Pickleball is a racquet sport similar to doubles tennis that is played either indoors or out on a playing area roughly the size of a badminton court

Orwell-area schools vote on unification plan

New Haven's Green Line talks progressing

NEW HAVEN — Negotiations continue between New Haven and developers of a renewable energy power line and high-voltage converter station in town, but town officials would not commit to when residents would get a vote on the matter.

The pace of these talks has become important as Middlebury has invited the Vermont Green Line project, which proposes running cable to move wind and hydro power from upstate New York to southern New England, to build the converter station in that town. And a VGL official has cautioned that the project must keep to its own schedule.

Porter Medical Center says it will close one doctors' office

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center officials on Wednesday promised to lead the organization out of its current period of financial challenges and broken morale, but served notice that the entire hospital community would in the meantime experience some short-term pain.

PMC’s interim CEO, Dr. Fred Kniffin, provided a vivid preview of that pain during a jam-packed annual meeting held in Middlebury College’s Bicentennial Hall, announcing the closing of the Porter Internal Medicine physicians practice.
