Schools review safety protocols in wake of tragedy

BRANDON — Like the rest of the nation, Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union Superintendent John Castle is still reeling from news of the unthinkable school shooting in Newtown, Conn., last Friday that killed 26, including 20 first-graders.

“This is one of those things that shakes you to the core,” Castle said of the massacre, where six adults including the school’s principal were also killed. “It’s your worst nightmare as an educator.”

Police hope to solve 41-year mystery of missing student

MIDDLEBURY — Monday, Dec. 10, brought the 41st anniversary in the search for former Middlebury College student Lynne Schulze, and with it a new set of eyes to scan some new information in the mountainous case file accumulated over the years by the Middlebury Police Department.

Middlebury police Detective Kris Bowdish is the latest in a long line of local investigators to head up the probe into what happened to Schulze, a first-year student who disappeared from Middlebury College campus back on Dec. 10, 1971.

Mary Hogan School considers Spanish language program

Fenn appeals Middlebury gravel pit ruling to Supreme Court

Special holiday religious services

ADDISON COUNTY — Several Addison County churches have set their schedule for special Christmas events and services.

BRANDON

Brandon Baptist Church will have a candlelight Christmas Eve service on Monday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m.

St. Mary’s Parish will hold a Christmas Eve service Monday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. There will also be a Christmas Day Mass, Tuesday, Dec. 25, at 10 a.m.

St. Thomas & Grace Episcopal Church will hold a Christmas Eve service at Grace Church on Route 73 in Forest Dale Monday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m.

Bomoseen man charged in Shoreham domestic violence incident

SHOREHAM — Vermont State Police cited Jason A. Gagnon, 27, of Bomoseen for domestic assault and other charges on Monday after he allegedly tried to force his way into a Shoreham apartment and then allegedly vandalized a car belonging to one of the female occupants who had tried to defend herself with a pistol.

Starksboro man killed in Route 4 vehicle crash

SHERBURNE — Vermont State Police are seeking help from the public in learning more about the crash that killed a Starksboro man in Sherburne on Friday afternoon.

Marland Brewer, 47, of Starksboro was killed in a two-vehicle head-on crash on Route 4 in Sherburne just east of the Killington Skyship gondola and Mission Farm Road on Dec. 14.

Troopers were called to the scene at 4:33 p.m. and told that a driver in one of the vehicles was entrapped. Traffic on the road was closed while police dealt with the accident.

ACSU leader finalists to visit on Wednesday

MIDDLEBURY — The two finalists for Addison Central Supervisory Union superintendent will spend an entire day in the district on Wednesday, Dec. 19, culminating in open-session interviews with the full ACSU board that evening.

As first reported by the Addison Independent, a district screening committee has narrowed its choices to two candidates: Burlington School District Superintendent Jeanne M. Collins and John W. Johnson, director of education information services for the state of Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction.

Monkton voices concern over proposed pipeline path

MONKTON — All hands are on deck to oppose the section of Vermont Gas Systems’s proposed $72 million pipeline that would cut through the Monkton area. More than 100 citizens have signed a petition in opposition, the Monkton selectboard followed suit with a letter to the Vermont Public Service Board last Tuesday, and at a Wednesday night meeting the Addison County Regional Planning Commission also signaled its reservations.

Health officials to offer free pertussis vacccine

BURLINGTON — The Vermont Department of Health will offer free whooping cough (Tdap) vaccine to anyone age 11 or older on Dec. 19 at each of its 12 district offices. This is being done in an effort to slow the spread of whooping cough, and protect infants, who are at greatest risk for serious illness and death.
