Trained dogs help students learn to read

BRANDON — In a quiet corner of the student support room at the Neshobe Elementary School in Brandon, a boy reads and a dog listens.

It’s Friday, and third-grader William Burt, 9, is carefully reading aloud to Ivan, a two-year-old German shorthaired pointer, and Ivan’s owner, Kristie Adams.

Ivan is a therapy dog, and once a month Adams brings him to Neshobe through a program offered by Caring Canines Therapy, a nonprofit group based in Massachusetts. He is one of three dogs that visit the student support room at Neshobe to do just that: support.

Towns' role in solar siting is debated as House takes up bill

WEYBRIDGE — Many Addison County residents will be closely watching the Vermont House as it fields a proposed law aimed at giving communities more input in the siting of solar arrays.

Bill S.230, endorsed by the state Senate last Thursday by a 22-3 tally, encourages communities to develop energy sections within their respective town plans that specify their solar siting priorities and specific locations within their borders where renewable energy projects could be sited.

New unified school districts become official as deadline passes

United Way needs big leap to make funding goal

MIDDLEBURY — The United Way of Addison County (UWAC) is hitting the home stretch of its 2015 fund drive needing a major infusion of cash if it is to achieve its goal of raising $700,000.

As of Monday, the United Way had received contributions amounting to $557,000, leaving officials concerned about the resources it will ultimately have at its disposal to distribute amongst the 32 local social service programs that fall under its organizational umbrella.

Porter presents options to patients whose physicians are leaving area

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center officials are reaching out to the scores of patients who will be affected by the announced closing of the Porter Internal Medicine (PIM) practice.

Porter Medical Center Interim CEO Dr. Fred Kniffin confirmed the closing at Porter’s annual meeting held on Wednesday, March 30. He sent a letter this week to PIM patients elaborating on the move.

Ayer, Bray eye leadership post

MONTPELIER — A second state senator plans to run for the top leadership post next year.

Sen. Christopher Bray, D-New Haven, said Tuesday he would seek the position of Senate president pro tempore for the next legislative session. The current Senate president, John Campbell, has said he will not run for re-election to the Senate this fall.
